We did an uninstall yesterday on our computer
and lost a file that windows needs to load
(vmm32.vxd). It says to run setup from
the windows95 cd. I tried that and that
gives an error message (something about
a problem with partitioning). I had someone
reformat my HD before (a particular company),
and he did not partition it. I can't run
set up because of this. How do I fix this?
Thanks in advance,

Jason

It is win 95 (B). I can get to my cd-rom,
but I get a partition error when I try and
run setup. The guy who set my computer up
did not partition the HD. Now, when I run
setup, it gives me and error. I was told
to first run FDISK to partition the HD.
Then format C and D. Then load cd-rom on
E. After I do this, it should load (so I
was told). Do you agree? If this is true,
what steps do I need to follow under the
FDISK? Thanks a bunch.

Boot with a boot disk that has fdisk and format on it. The best way to do this call a local computer shop and get them to copy you a win98 bootdisk. With this you get the utils you need and cdrom drivers that work on around 90% of cd roms.

type fdisk from the a: prompt and the answer yes to enable large drive partition. This will gove you fat32. From the menu choose 4 to veiw the current partition table. If there are no partitions defined the scroll down a little.

If there are partitions defined, then make a note of what kind they are. They will either be primary, extended, logical, or nondos. After this hit escape and choose 3 from the menu. Delete the partitions. Note if there are logical and extended partitions then they must be romoved in that order. Logical first the extended. And finally remove the primary. Hit escape twice and reboot when it tells you.

Once back at an a: prompt run fdisk again. You should now have no partitions defined. Choose 1 once inside fdisk to create your partitions. Make them what ever size you want. If you use fat32 you can just make on large partition. or make smaller ones if that is what you want. just follow the instructions. Once you have all the partitions defined hit escapoe twice and reboot when it tells you.

Now you are back at the a: prompt and should have a partitioned harddrive. From the a: prompt type

format c:

If you are using a win98 bootdisk you should not copy the system files to the hard drive. Just format it. Once it is done and if you have the cdrom drivers loaded then change to the e: drive (or whatever your cdrom is)and type

mkdir c:\win95cab

change to your win95 cd and go to the win95 directory. Then type

copy *.* c:\win95cab

This should copy all the setup files to your hard drive. Once that is done, change back to your c: drive and go to your win95cab directory and run setup.

That worked perfectly. No hang ups.
However, it did not detect the USB port.
I bought this computer at a swap meet.
It had all of the components (sound card,
usb port, etc.), but no software was loaded,
and it didn't have a cd-rom or modem. The
usb port is on the same card as the
mouse (probably just an add on card). USB
is supposed to be plug and play, but it is
not detecting it. I have a Quickcam that
I would like to set up, but don't know
where to start to get the usb port going.
Any ideas on this? Thanks in advance again.

You might want to check in the bios to see if USB is disabled
