I installed a new Maxtor 8.4gig with MaxBlast 1.10 bios extention. I ran it with a mirrored copy and it ran fine. When I tried to make a clean install I got Gen. Protection Fault SUWIN.EXE @ 0008:1548.

You might try Fdisking the drive again this solved my problem with that error. What version of MaxBlast are you using? If your computer can handle it partition in bigger sections like 2 4gig.

Ya, I tried fdisk and on the advise of others tried changing the RAM and disabling disk cache. All I get is a slight variation of the protection error.

I have a Packard Bell 110CTD with a Pent. 180mmx overdrive, 40meg RAM, built in cirus vidio with Voodoo2 card, 33.6 winmodem, and a SB Waveffect. I know its a peace of junk. I even thought about a minor ajustment with a 3lb sledge. After 40 min long distance with Microsoft and Maxtor I still have no idea what an Suwin is. Any suggestions would be very much appriciated.

When are you getting the error message if it after the enduser agreement check out the link below. Also microsoft has some other articles about that error. Could be the cirrus logic video card

Happen to have a intel CPU laying around? If so throw that in. The 180 mhz overdrive is probably a winchip or amd. And while amd is much perferable it can still cause these errors. Also try to time you ram a little slower in bios.
