Hello all,

I post this question as it is an ongoing nusance to me. I recently built up a Pentium II 350 based on a Tyan Tsunami Mainboard. After about a month I began to get an error message upon boot. Vmm32.vxd missing/unable to load. Computer shut down re start to safe mode. After safe mode, fresh restart and boot to desktop. I am aware that this message could indicate a RAM incompatability. I replaced the RAM with a hunk of PNY. Just last week, I re installed WIN95 OSR2 on the system. Installed all the hardware and drivers. No problem. Loaded all the software..No problem. When I came home this morning, I fired it up and WA LA.. Couldnt boot.. Vmm32.vxd missing/unable to load. Shut down. Reboot into safe mode. I open explorer, check the /Windows/System folder and the file is there.... I can't begin to tell you how FRUSTRATING this is. Microsoft tells me I ahve to re install Win95. They seem to know nothing about this. I am turning to the great minds at Windrivers in hope they may have some suggestions...

Thank you.
Regards,
SUlli

Hi there. I also ran into this problem. I went through a couple of weeks of hell with a customer. We finally came to find that a scanner he was using loaded something in the config.sys and .386 drivers when booting up. One we REM them out the problem went away. What other types of devices (scanners, printers etc are you using) This could help to solve this trouble without a new w95 install!

Hi mzcpu

I appreciate you response. At the time this was happening, i had not even hooked up my printer or scanner. I had only re installed the hardware. That includes, a Diamond fireport 4o ultra scsi card, Turtle beach sound card, Diamond Fire Gl 1000 Pro vid card, Us Robotics 33.6 internal modem. This problem is sporadic and does not do it all the time. The randomness of it puzzles me. It may boot fine 5 out of 7 times then start to burp...

check the CPU temperature. If it boots fine some of the time then it could be that the chip is overheating somehow. Also make sure that the Voltage ( VCore ) for the CPU is no more than 2.05v as this happened to our tech system in the office & started throwing up weird & wonderful messages.

If the chip is running higher than 110F then you have a heat related problem somewhere along the system.

Thank you Darren

I will check the Voltage and CPU temp.

Try setting you clock speed to 75 x 4.5. if your problem goes away your memory is to slow for the cpu.

I want to take this time to thank you guys here at windrivers.com and all of you who took the time to provide me with so many useful tips and hints. Microsoft has the wrong people working at their Help Desk..The best Windows minds are right here..

Thanks to you guys the problem has been solved. I got an Email from Bob And Jeanne who told me of a similar problem with the use of scanners...Mainly the UMAX variety. When I told them that is what kind of scanner driverws were loaded, they forwarded UMAX's web site to me. I went to theri knowledge base and right there in Black and White was the answer.. VMM32.vxd message failure to boot on PC. Apparenty, the driver UMAX uses affects PII's 300 and above running Win95 and 98. They have a patch on their web site. I downloaded it, installed it and it is working fine.. I couldn't have done it with out all your help and for that I am deeply grateful.
