I have an Award Modular Bios V4.5ipg which says bios ext v1.0a could some one please tell me how to upgrade it and how to back it up before I try

Usally when you upgade the the new bios it asks you at that time if you want to back up your old bios.

You download the upgrade from the motherboard manufacturer's web site. Watch the bios string that appears across the bottom of the screen during bootup, then visit www.ping.be/bios (http://www.ping.be/bios) to determine your motherboard. Be careful when flashing your bios. Get the wrong one and you could render the system inoperable.

In addition to CompuDocs' reply (which is absolutely correct) you'll also need to download the program that does the flashing.
It's an .exe one. (i.e. flash.exe)
