Howdy folks, I've stumbled on a neat little program for creating a ramdisk in windoze98 called apropriately enough Ramdisk98. I found it at simtel.net windows 95-98 collection but I checked and it's no longer there. I do however have the shareware version saved and could send it to you to put in the utilities section of this site. I also have the authors info if needed. With a minimal amount of setup,(some registry editing is necessary)I've used it to create a 32 meg ramdrive that I use for my internet cache. The speed improvement is awesome. Pages load at the speed of ram which is pretty darn quick. It will also save itself to the HD at shutdown and reload at startup. You can defrag it and scandisk it just like an ordinary hard drive. Any questions? By the way I love this site. Keep up the good work!!! ;-)

It's available to download <a href="http://spud1.physics.iastate.edu/ramdsk98/"> here</a>

Funny thing is I have been doing this since about MS-DOS 4.1 or so http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/wink.gif

If you are feeling adventurous, check out RAMDRIVE.SYS in your windows directory. If yu set up a single line in config.sys (no downloading of any new files) you too can have a RAM drive. The sad part is that it unfortunately cannot be any larger than 32MB. I personally use this as a way to cheat, though not really, in Quake 2. I put all of my map files and the program PAK file in the RAM Drive and tell Q2 to use those files when it needs data. This means that when a new level starts on the server I am playing on, I respawn immediately and have almost 10 seconds to go around getting powerups before anyone else even spawns in the level. It is really funny when I already have the enemy flag (CTF) and am on my way back to base when they spawn. They try to chase me with blasters... but it is really pointless for them http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/wink.gif It may sound like cheating... but hey... it's just that my computer is faster... If you want to spawn the same time as me... well... get a faster computer http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif

Steve,

How do you designate Quake2 to use a different drive for just the map files???
