I'm going to be a fence sitter on this one.
Both Havoc and Darren have good points. As someone who has been hiring people for our copmany a stupd peice of MS test paper and a few yearsin the industry means nothing. I've met alot of peple over the past two weeks who are simply clueless. However, Microsoft is driven by competition instead of quality, and such has opted to release some of the biggest software tradgedies that has marred our industry. By the way I can't type and spell at the same time so screw havOc. I'm really very good but this is not the time nor the place for and english lesson. I digress--- NT4 is a prime example how many Service Packs does it take to secure or ensure a crash-free system eh? SP4 was a joy to try and get out of my server ( and yes I tested it on my backup server not a primary server)(sarcasim intended here)
I'm trying to transfer my systems over to Linux simply because there are people behind the project that beleive in the "higher" goal of better code. But I still need a MS system while I wait for the rest of the industry to catch up. Linux is not there yet but I intend to help it get there faster if only to bankrupt an undeserving company that has held us by the nuts for so long.
I've been running AMD chips for the past two years and have abaondoned Intel who seems to be getting a little to up in itself, (just have a read about ERATTA and take a look at some of the dumbd down Intel chip SPECS). they haven;t had an original chip design in a while guys they just get smaller and hotter. I'm sorry but Apple has got us all beat they're faster than all of us and cooler to they just suck as a company for us poor guys that like pissing around with thier computer into the wee-hours of the night. AMD is the better chip against Intel and they're not cheating by making a bigger socket system either!!!.
Anyways, Hardware is an issue though when it comes to stability. It doen't take much to kill a system. Linux neewbies can tell you this, one bad script and your can fry your NIC, MS is not above this and as builders, amdins and users we have a responsibility to the industry to look at ourselves as well as hold software developers to a higher standard. It's the only way were going to get better.
This is a great forum, and I'll register after I get some paint on my poor VW. I'm almost 11 years in the industry and an MS/ Novell/ Unix Admin with a background of Basic/ C/ C++/ Pascal/ Fortran and COBOL
(I was programming when I was 10yrs old and admining since I was 17) -- I still have a loooong way to go before I can call myself any type expert which is silly anyways because our industry reinvents itself every financial quarter anyways right???.
-- By the way I'm not in a pissing contest on qualifications. Just letting you know where I'm coming from so you can weight my words. There are a few million others with 100% better credentials than I.
Oh sh-- this is a tech forum not a politics hissy fit... sorry.. I'll contriubte when the paint dries -- hvae to jet. I have much to say on Win98-- but I still use OSR2 on most my systems simply because it's stable.
What Game?? I duno no game? - Here's typing at yah.
hit me at lewis_cs@hotmail.com (yes it's an MS mailer but it works... most of the time <grin>.)
