Why stop at the lights !

I mean, you could have coffee and toast ready for you first thing in the morning, dinner cooked and the shopping done by the time you get home, etc, etc.

1. Pull everything out and use the case to store your shoes. Especially if it's a full-tower one.
2. If a friend of yours collects insects (spiders or ants), give it to him. It'd be a great park and they could have some fun.
3. Put four wheels on it and use it as a skateboard.

What do you mean, amusing? My PC is a 486!

I guess running OS/2 and NT Workstation on it is pretty amusing... LOL

You need to try overclocking it to the max, try attaching a car battery to the processor for some extre juice if needed. If all else fails it makes a nice give it to some younger kid so they can learn all about these wonderful thing called a 486 they learned about in their computer class.

See what it looks like at the bottom of a pool. Give it to your dog to play with. Send it c.o.d. to your mother-in-law (with a dead fish inside it). set it outside with the trash and see how long it takes before someone takes it. I did that with 4 old 13" IBM monitors and 2 old apple printers. I almost had a war in my front yard!

i have a 486 on a platform in my shop with the folowing sign: This is an example of marketing hype. Computer design reached its ultimate with the 386 processor. Don't be fooled! Experimental operating systems with weird names like "GOOEY" will never work. Also, take out all the unecessary memory sticks! It will save time on boot up as the system will not have to count all that unecessary and expensive ram. Stick with the base 640k. After all, 640k should be enough for anyone. Ask about our affordable 386sx with Dos 2.0. prices starting at about $1000.00.
P.S. business is slow. any ideas?

Hey!! I run a Red Hat / FreeBSD linux server off a 486 sx 25!!! they are the perfect system for it - darned lousy PSU is a loud pain in the butt tho. It doesn't run x-win, but i can use it for gateway services - ie a firewall etc...

A 486 dx4 100 does a not too bad workstation! Oh well I guess they are a hunk of junk really when you think about it.

Hehe. Here is how I got rid of mine and got some target practice with it also.
Where I live we have a pond and some trees near it with a sling shot hooked to one where one person stands in the bucket and another person jumps on to a rope which causes the other person to be launched into the water (we had a good physics teacher). One day we decided to put things for target practice since the place we where using was about to be destroyed by the Mississippi river which floods everyspring and the tree was allready leaning too much to survive another flood. Well we blew up a lot of old computers take didnt work no more, as well as a few old tv's, vcr's, monitors, and a few maniquens.
We was also using 10 gauge shotguns to shoot them with

Pull out the processor and pry the heatsink and/or fan off of it. Go to the nearest large body of water and see how many times you can skip it along the surface of said water.

i use a 486 dx2 66 as a print and internet server.

now an imac, though, now THAT would make a great fish tank. clear out all the boards, pull out the crt, stick a tank in there, and you got a iAquarium. 5 fruit flavors, let your fish choose the one they love! think different.

I know...but you need a few parts first:

1)One network Card for the 486
2)A few High Speed cables
3)One networking OS (VMC/OS* should work fine)
4)One stolen government CRAY mainframe

Hook up the old 486 and overclock it too 247Mhz as the Eunuch Project allegdly did (see above post or go to http://totl.net/Eunuch/index.html ).

Turn on the CRAY after the 486 has been running for 3minutes. Run for cover!

Possible outcomes:
A)You discover a new power source that replaces nuclear reactors.

B)You die from the ensuing explosion that mutates everyone in your city into Tickle Me Elmos.

C)The 486 achieves consciousness and begins WWIII and starts manufacturing T-100's that go back in time to kill your mother.

How's that for an answer...
Nathan

* what is VMC/OS? (Virtual Morse Code/Operating System) :-)

I had an old IBM desktop (not a 486, a Pentium 133) once that the motherboard crapped out on. As I was salvaging the parts out of it, I noticed that the funny looking bracket used to hold the 3 1/2" drives might be put to another use...

The drive cage had a bar on top that was offset to the right a bit (looking from the back of the case). The bar attached to the rear of the case to provide support. The whole thing was removable, I took it out and bent the left wall of the cage 90 degrees and screwed an old hard drive to the right wall to provide some weight, thus creating a crude but effective hatchet. Taped some pipe insulation around the handle too.

On the subject of making weaponry out of computer parts, take 3-4 power cables of the same length and fold them in half so that you have all the front ends and back ends together. Starting about 4 inches down from the mass of ends, wrap the cables down to about 4-6 inches from the bottom to leave yourself a good loop to put your wrist through. You've just made yourself a modern variant of the cat-o'-nine-tails.

A hatchet? Never thought of that... In truth I took an old 486 tower and put a Pentium board in it. The outside of the case still said 4/66 so no one wants to use my computer because it would be too slow. I doubt anyone would ever try to steal my Gateway 386/33sx with P-3 guts either...

Also works great with old wide-carriage dot matrix printers if you remove the platen knobs first.

silly uses?

dropping one off of a 7 story building onto your wifes head for the insurance money?

A more practical yet less economical thing to do would be to donate them to a local NFP organization. To you they may only be worth -$25, as a tax deduction you could write a 486 off as $500... that's $500 of non-taxable income!
