As long as they are just slightly magnatized and dont leave them beside floppies (which is bad to keep a messy workbench) then they are invaluable.

It would be tough going without them.

I love mine - it's just a Popular Mechanics Wal Mart special. They don't sell this one any more - has yellow and black handle and came with several bits stored in the handle.

Of course the screw on cap and bits are long gone but the #2 Phillips bit is still holding on! Been with me for quite some time http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif

Can't do without 'em.
I'm wondering who DOESN'T use them.

Wow... I just imagined life without my magnetic screwdriver. What a horrible place. I would lose so many screws in mb's without it. Again, who DOESN'T use one??

Mine has light in the tip that helps greatly. I somehow always manage to drop at
least one screw.

Considering the poor (for lack of better word) designs of cases that I am constantly forced to work on (not gonna mention any names like HP or Power Spec) I couldn't live without mine. The problem I find is that the magnetic tips are usualy "soft" and wear out quickly, while the hardened tips I find are non-magnetic. Solution? Rare earth magnet out of a 10MB Conner HDD. A couple of swipes and any screw diver can practicly be used to pick up an engine block. Good for de-resing floppies, too.

Call me superstitious or whatever, but I never use a magnetic screwdriver, and probably never will. I have, however, found a little device that makes my life so much easier: it clips on the end of any screwdriver and holds the screw in place with a clip. No more dropped screws! I forget where I got it, but I hope to God I never lose it! LOL

Sure. The ones I like best are the little free ones auto parts stores give out with the magnet in the end of the handle. BTW, pcshark mentions the screw clip - Blackhawk Tools makes a screwdriver with a similar clip already on it.

Fantastic!! - they are the best things for those stupid little faceplate screws which fall off the sides, into the mobo, and between those nics and agp cards!

Thanks, rfmathis, now I know where I can get one in case I lose mine! (-;

Hi,
I was always kinda leery of using them until I saw a Canon training film where their techs used them throughout the whole tape. Really kind of blew me away but I must admit that I use them all the time now.
Hope this helps out.

I don't think I know anyone who works with PC's that DOESN'T use one!

Can't live without them. My current favorite has a built-in light and an extension tip that reaches out another 18" for that screw which escapes to the bottom of the board or even better runs away and tries to hide under the desk...

I use 'm too, im not even going to ask who doesn't because i figure its been said enough. heck, ive found that using them on hard drives doesn't even do anything to the data on them.

The only time I've damaged anything with a magnetic screwdriver is when I beat the holy hell out of a HD with the handle.

You too? Got an otherwise dead HD to spinup more than once over the years...

Magnetic all the way baby. The amount of magnetism on your typical screwdriver isn't enough to really do any damage, as long as you don't leave it sitting on anything magnetically sensitve. Though I have seen a magnetic screwdriver kill a cdrom drive... But that was b/c a cust tried to install their own CD rom, got frustrated and stabbed the screwdriver through the cdrom and case... Probs can't blame that on the magnetic tip though...

I got two, One I keep in the trunk , the other on my workbench, both are Panasonic's.
Ive used various brands these are by far the best.As long as you keep a clean workbench, you should'nt have any problems

Magnetic without a doubt.
