I recently had some pretty frustrating problems with a Duron socketA processor. After swapping memory, case/power supplies, mobos, and phasing through various states of insanity, I finally discovered (with help) that the corner of my processor chip was chipped. This was probably a product of my poor fan mounting skills. I usually utilized the hook-slide and snap method, if you can visualize that. I'm now thinking that I just need to put the fan where it belongs and then worry bout the hooks.
Then I thought, hey, why not ask the Windrivers guys! Lots of experience there! So what are the best methods, so we can avoid costly processor damage.

Here's something that I saw at Plycon's:

Kind of pricey at $44.99 (USD) though.

The Zalmans all did poorly when Toms Hardware tested them. See the link below.
I personal have used the method you spoke of for years and have never broke a CPU.
just be careful you brut

Thanks for the link xt477. Great site. I have always used GlobalWin coolers and it's nice to know this site rates them high. I'm usually pretty careful with my installs, so I am wondering if this processor may have been chipped from the get go.
That does sound like a lot of work to install a cooler, argh. But thanks for the info. I think I'll just be more careful from now and check my processors for chips before install.

I would have never thought this would be such an issue. Found this at one of the suppliers I buy from.
