Ever swapped your shell then removed the replacement but then your machine won't boot into Windows? Just boot into DOS open up edit and change config.sys to make sure 'shell = explorer.exe'

Since the topic is here, does anyone have any good recommendations for a shell replacement?

I once saw one that was proclaimed as a great shell for gaming, however when I got home I couldn't remember the name (Atom or Adam bomb? Something Atom..)

And before anyone suggests Linux as a replacement.. I'm working on that, but I want to explore all my options...

LiteStep (http://www.litestep.com/) is the most fun, but what do you mean by best? Pretty? Stable? Small memory footprint?

Litestep is good, but I've personally had a few problems with it. i.e. it don't work. For some reason explorer seems to be super-imposing itself on top (desktop background).

If any one knows any good shells that have a small memory footprint let me know.

+ Polychronopolis, I do think you should use Linux, it's good if you know how to use it. And if you have Windows as well, then all the better. My computer runs Win2KPro Win95 + Linux and runs fine.

Dark2K - try 2xExplorer. It is small, fast, ungodly stable, and free.

Are you running win2k? I used to have that problem. There are a few registry entries that you need to change to get it to work right. Check www.ls2k.org (http://www.ls2k.org) for the help files, see if you can find it. If not, email me and I'll send you the address. If anyone cares, here's a LARGE (~4 min on a 56k) pic of my desktop

No, I woz using Win95. How well does it work in Win2K? Oh, and I've found a way to change loads of stuff in explorer. Use a program called TClock (just use Google to search for it) to change the start menu and all that. And there's a program called resource hacker that you can use on Explorer.exe to change menus. I can only seem to change the Start menu properties at the moment.
