I found a good site online, how to make your own cat5 cable (rj45 cable). Now for those who dont know how to make it but want to learn, then this is for you.

if it's a patch cable, it doesn't matter what order the wires are in as long as they're the same on both ends...

It does matter somewhat, you want to have the twisted pairs together so that they cut down interferance.
I don't make cables anymore, I either get some retail ($12 for a 40' and $15 for a 50')
or go to the local tech shop and have them make me one (if I need a cross-over)
I know how; I am just not good at it. Takes me 5+ minutes if I have the tools. Where I am at now, I don't have the tools... darn :-)

I am dissapointed that someone would spread misinformation like this. I agree that in a 5' 10BT cable it will work as long as the wires match on both ends, but that is not the right way to do it.

Try that at 100BT on a 90 meter run. It will not work. <IMG SRC="smilies/redface.gif" border="0">

That is probably true, unless they fluke out the right way to do it.

I enjoy making cables, it's much cheaper. It's nice to have a cable tester handy though. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

One time I work for a government department that refurbished old systems to give out to schools. One day we got a box of cable donated. We were like, yeah, nice! But when we opened it up, the whites had no stripes on them! <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> (i.e. White of green, white of brown, etc.) It wasn't too see which whites went with which color, but still!
