Cable Modem common problems

Lately we've been seeing an awful lot of hassle with cable modems...

Three things have stood out.

With machines that seem fine but won't browse the net, two culprits have been common:
WinMX - Uninstalling it makes the machine work perfectly, and,
NewDotNet - Running AdAware makes the machine work perfectly.

And the third problem we've been having is with browsers unable to access some high security websites. This has been solved by making sure "Use a proxy server" is NOT checked.

Not saying this will solve all of your cable modem grief, but I've noticed these three trends in our store over the last few weeks, so if it helps anybody in their troubleshooting, all is good...

i had a similar problem, it was with a game called halflife i downloaded an update for it and after that i was able to connect to the net but wasnt able to browse. i removed the game and still the same couldnt figure it out, even called the dsl support and still nothing.
ended up reinstalling win98 and now im able to connect ok, the wierd thing is i reinstalled the game and installed the same update and everything works fine and i can browse.
not to sure why it works now but im guessing maybe another program also caused some kind of conflict with it or something, actually i did have winmx to on the system but i wasnt able to do anything with it , it was never able to connect to the server,so i removed it, but i was still able to browse the net

Something probally corrupted the winsock.dll or the winsock2 key.

newdotnet thing is a bitch, i personally use winMX without any problems, as well.. and some cable ISPS don't require u to use their proxy.. mine doesn't

I'm running on DSL using Win2k and have had no problems. My wife is running on WinME with no problems as well. What's WinMX? Should I worry? Sorry, but I've never heard of it and just would like to know what it is.

Personal firewall software can also get in the way of your high speed

watch for that too...

Seen the AT&T software cause the same problems recently. I tell people DO NOT let the AT&T guy install that cr4p. Someone mentioned tinys software causing similar probs...been using Winroute Pro for a few years and never had a problem. I use the NAT features and keep up with the builds though. I'm just happy to see home users starting to realize they NEED a firewall solution with that broadband.

I have noticed a lot of alerts lately from my Zone Alarm and slow access to the 'net , I think Windrivers is having some problems as well since I expience dial up speeds at times
I think Neo trace would help you to trace IP address,s :eek: :(

I forgot to mention that when I shut down my spare computer ( WIn me , I just installed Norton Sys works 2001 ), I get a dialouge box that two users were attached to my machine ( No Zone Alarm running yet )
Is this a sign of a hacker getting into my spare computer?
I may run a virus scan and if I have to , reformat and reinstall just in case I have a trojan
Ideas any one :eek: ;)

Before you do anything that drastic try disbaling file and print sharing

I'm a Cox @home user with Zonealarm and I get alot of attempted hit on my system because of that Red SEctor virus or whatever it is called. From what I am seeing, @home is turning off port 80 to keep users from acting like servers (which, if you read the agreement, servers are NOT allowed) and keeping the virus from spreading

Adelphia set me up to use their proxy server. Many problems. When I disabled it no problems plus an increase in speed. Many programs, esp free internet boosters will attempt to become your proxy server, so beware.

weird I have never had a problem yet with my cable modem. Must be your hardware :)

Works fine under linux and windows 2000 Pro. Even internet sharing.

Are you running a USB cable modem?

I work with Propritary software using SQL. This new.net also hoses SQL even removing rolling back the MDAC and reinstalling still leaves SQL hosed. A great tip to get out there,

WOW, thanks for the tip. Our engineering office uses heating/cooling load calc software that uses SQL. I'll be sure to check everyone's computer using AdAware and force remove newdotnet.

I almost hate newdotnet as much as winmodems. BUT NOT QUITE.

guys avoid the "skinned" versions of IE that the companies market as their @Home Browser, they are slow, take forever to install and suck! a lot of problems i have run into is via the signal, the send and recieve frequencies aren't at high enough levels. or they are to high
