What's your opinion on third party cpu upgrades? Ever use a evergreen or kingston cpu upgrade package? Let me know because they piss me off!

Not worth it. They don't run as fast as the actual chip, not by a long shot. With chips as cheap as they are, it is cheaper to do a full upgrade than use an overdrive.

Turns your computer into Frankenstein. Chips are soooo cheap nowadays why would anyone bother?

Once again working with cheap customers never works out to your advantage. They complain that they don't have the money to do an upgrade, then they can't pay you for the time you spend f$%^ing with their cheap solution then when it breaks or don't work you give away more free crap to satisfy your customer that is always right.

My advice - don't ever sell cheap equipment.

Did you guys see "the lazy man's upgrade" article in maximumpc not to long ago? It was fairly interesting. But unfortunatly expensive.

Last time I did one of those upgrades was back in '96, I think. Some accountant's office down the shore, we took them from 486-25 S(u)X up to what Evergreen called "586-75." There was some performance upgrade, and they seemed happy. All in all, though, a stupid upgrade. Rather go MoBo, Processor. Much more reliable.

Hah, forgot to mention that i have also seen no less than five people install the evergreen packages and FRY them too! i just don't get it? I don't know that much about cars, why would i try and replace the engine when i know it probably won't work? WTF??!?!?

Never tried the 3rd party upgrade CPU's, but the Intel P-83 Overdrive's were quite popular (I had one myself). Funny thing was, some software actually ran slower with the P-83 than it did with the 486-66!

Interesting note: Tom's Hardware Guide has an article about a module to upgrade a Socket 5 motherboard to a K6-2 400!

We've sold Evergreen 400MHz upgrade chips in the shop before.. had moderately good luck with them.. also had some Kingston 366 upgrades(need 166 or higher) no luck at all with them tho.....
