What's everyone's dumbest workorder ever? You know, the blatent abuse of power like having you fix someones AOL IM on their work computer or paid you for something stupid like removing files?
We have a woman here, calls up at least once a week, because her Scottie Dog Screensaver doesn't work. And then there was the guy when I was in retail, who crashed his HDD and paid us all bonuses if we could save his pron. I pocketed $100 that day. hehe

I have a guy who comes to me regularly to ask if I can take a look at his machine on his desk cause he can't hook up to radio stations on the net through the proxy. This is blatently against our network policy and streaming audio is in fact listed specifically in the handbook. I keep telling him this and refuse to look at it, but about one a month he shows up to ask if I can take a look at his "internet radio."
Drives me batty.

Only thing I had was a guy sent in a Linux 2U rack to me becasue he claimed that the servers Raid HDD was going out, and he needed all the files saved it was very very important.
Well I turned it on and found that he has 2 HDD's so I just mounted the second hard drive (since the first booted) and had it mount the second drive automatically on boot. Will I looked ont he disk to see if it works and it turns out that its a web server 2U rack, what kinda you ask a porn server <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
So what do you think we did, stole his 30 gb worth of porn lol.

Drove 40 miles the day after I delivered and installed a PC, under the on-site warranty, because the "PC wont work at all". When I took the call I asked all the usual questions about is it plugged in etc. When I got there I turned the monitor on for him, and took his £50.

I had a customer (read: Temp) who insisted that the machine I sold to the site was broken and that I needed to come out IMMEDIATELY and fix it. Now I was over an hour away and had a two hour minimum repair time (read: $85/hr.) so I did not wish to go all the way out there and turn the machine on. So I was trying to talk her through some basic trouble shooting - things like:
me: "Is the power on"
her: "I've been pushing the spacebar all day long and the machine won't come on"
me: "Did you push the POWER button"
her: "Like I said I've been hitting the space bar all morning and you need to come here NOW and fix it, it's is your machine and it's broken - you need to come here now."
me: "Ok, it's under warranty and I am happy to come out, but if the machine is not broken then you will be billed for the minimum service call."
her: "That's fine. the machine is broken and YOU need to come fix it."
Well I got to the site, walked up to the machine, pushed the power button, and - you guessed it - the machine powered right up and worked liek a champ. Easy - $170 and that temp was never invited back to the site.

Do the math and figure out how many days this pc was left on. And she wondered why things were going so slow.

I had a user tell me she had lost her "hoverability"...to me, that is something women do over public toilets...
I humored her and went to her desk..she couldnt "hover" over her calander and see what the meeting was (so she said)...like it takes ALOT of effort to double click the entry....Anyway, I went up there, "hovered" and it was fine...
Go figure...damn users...

Sure, I've had people who want their porn saved (we won't do it in the shop but I'm always willing to make some after-hours ca$h.)
Best work order ever was for a VCR. Sales guy took it in on his first day. I'd never worked on a VCR in my life, but I fixed it and charged him $50 (the VCR was only worth $10 at yard-sale prices.) The drive belt had slipped from its groove, and it happened to be the same size as one from an old SCSI CDRom.
Most profitable was the lady that had a list of things fo rme to do on-site. Fix the network on at least 6 machines, 2 monitor problems, 3 people's mice didn't work, etc. I get there and she isn't there. I'm told I can't work until she arrives, she is the only one who knows what's wrong and where in the huge building. I bill her from the time I arrive, she calls my cell and says "Wait I'll be right there." 2 hours later I am calling her cell to no answer.
She got caught in a meeting and I was hanging out all day, promised I would be paid. $420 and all I managed was to fix a laser printer that the receptionist (who I was hitting on) couldn't get working.

I'm in a corporate IS dept so I don't get to charge anybody but just this morning the head of security called me over and asked me to fix why he couldn't get through to the Pittsburgh Steelers website. (Their site was down) I've also had people bring in their home pc's for me to work on while at work. Usually they have the courtesy to ask first but not always. If I like them I usually help out, a perk of being an IS guy's buddy.

We have sales staff running around with laptops, we also have mapped drives on the network for them to connect to to run our Dbase program, Got a call this morning from one of them saying thet they cant get email, cant get onto the network etc.......they forgot to plug the network cable into their Xircom 10/100 network cards.

Errrrrrrrrrrr every IT work order I get.
(not joking)
usually its "why won't my computer connect to the internet?" look down and they knocked the cable out of the wall from sitting their crap on it, or from kicking it. Or "can you move my pc from the left side of my desk to the right side" it takes me half an hour to do that because I have to move about 5000 pictures of their 7 kids, dog, grandma, husband, etc...and all the stupid desktop crap, figurines, stuffed animals. I swear I think every woman here has at least 2 kids a piece and enough pictures to choke a horse. Or "hey can you change my icons into winnie the pooh icons with the tigger wallpaper?" Yeah I learned all these operating systems just so I can make their pc look like a 10 year old girls notebook. One of the managers here even has N'Sync dolls sitting on her monitor.
But by far the two most hated things here are those freaking headsets, man I have nightmares about those. Here the reps use Headsets and about 20 break a week. so I am constantly replacing those and locking them down. (yeah I went to school for this?) And when a PC shuts down and I need parts, they always want me to find away around buying stuff. "Well do you really need those keyboard adapters so the old p166 (which use an old AT 5 pin din) can use the new keyboards (which don't come with connectors only can fit in a ps/2 port)?" Or Boss: "why is my pc so slow?" me: because you only have 32mb of ram and you have like 12 excel spreadsheets open and the internet. Boss: well what can we do? Me: Buy some more ram, its really cheap right now. Boss: Is there anything else we can do besides buying more equipment? Me: yeah don't open as many programs on your computer. Boss: Anything else besides that?
Please someone kill me.
Sorry for the rant. I know someone is going to say "why don't you get another job?" and my answer is "I am looking right now, but the market here sucks"
But sorry the rant again and thank you guys for reading my long (possibly boring) rant.

A few months ago, I had an onsite service call to hook up a ladies answering machine to her fax machine (so someone could either leave a message, or send a fax on the same line).
Being a "PC Technician", I don't dilly dally a lot with answering machines. Got there, asked her for the manual, read it for about 15 seconds, knew what to do, and bam! all done!
Charging $125/hour with 1 hour minimum, made out pretty handsomly on that one!

Had a customer call and tell me she was bringing her sons computer in because his roommate (at a military school no less) played a joke on him and that his computer needed to be fixed. I agreed to check it out. When she arrives there is a sticky dried substance on the front of the computer and this same goo was coming out of the CD and floppy drives. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm24.gif Then she tells me her sons roomate had put cream cheese in the drives, power supply and inside the computer. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm41.gif I wound up replacing everything listed above, but it had dried enough with a little scraping and compressed air it didn't ruin the motherboard or any other internal components. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm32.gif

Here's another one for ya....
Keep in mind I live in the panhandle of Texas.
Had a guy bring his computer in saying it wouldn't boot up. While doing the work order I noticed a petrolium smell coming from the computer, so I asked him what it might be and he replied that the power supply fan was making a noise so he usedsome WD-40 on it and it quit making noise, so I thought well......ok......maybe it was something else. So when I got it on my work bench and cracked it open then I realized he musta used half the can!!! http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm24.gif It was so thick in the power supply area, he's lucky it didn't ingnite when he powered it up!! It had also saturated the filter on the breather hole of the hard drive. I told him at this point it would be better to buy another computer, but he said to go ahead and fix this one! I replaced almost everything inside this IBM E-24 system. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm35.gif
