Stop the madness NOW! Dude, you don't like Christmas much, do you? Well, let me explain how I view it....it's a time for people of any religion (my father's side of the family is Jewish) or no religion (like me) to be reminded of some of the things we forget about the rest of the year....like how special it is to see our families, or how important it is to be kind to our fellow man. Certainly we should hold these feelings within us the entire year, but it's just a good thing to have one special day set aside for everyone to be reminded of it. Right near the end of the year, when everyone's getting tired, and the year seems so long, here comes this one day where you can smile at anyone and wish them happieness, and not feel awkward about it for one reason or another. At time when families who are together celebrate that togetherness, and families who are apart make an extra special effort to be together. With all the hate and violence in the world, holidays like Ramadan (sp?), Christmas, and Haunakah(sp?) are and should be very special times when we can step away from that. Of course, I do agree that commercialization of the holidays should be banned, and ad executives who insist on doing it should be shot, hung, stabbed, stretched, stoned, burned at the stake, drawn, and quartered. ------------------ Bryan Pizzuti CompTIA A+, CNAP bpizzuti@earthlink.net jaeger December 12th, 2000, 07:52 AM Originally posted by NPaladin: Dude, you don't like Christmas much, do you? (-: I have my own views on Christmas. Christmas is a time for giving. Giving time to your family and friends. Giving to those who don't have. What I celebrate in Christmas - and because I am a Christian, I have the right to celebrate Christmas, and I do not shove my Christian holidays down anyone's throats - is the ultimate gift, the gift of God's son to the world. That's what Christmas is about. I give the people I love gifts to signify my appreciation of this gift, and I expect nothing in return. To me, asking for gifts at Christmas is hypocritical, but that's just me. So when people ask me what I want for Christmas, I say I want people to be just a little nicer to each other. That also means that I embrace other religions in their religious holidays during this season, without trying to shove Christmas down anyone's throats. Peace, love, and tolerance are the principals that Christ taught us, and those are the things that should govern our hearts at Christmas, not what we get in return but what we give freely and unconditionally. That's all I have to say about it (-: ------------------ R. Bret Walker, CNE Wondering what videos to rent this weekend? Stop the madness NOW! Just FYI Christmas is actually a pagan holiday that was adopted later by christianity for the purpose of celebrating the birth of christ. So if you're going to bag on someone about the christmas spirit bag on the people that have over commericalized sp? the holidays, and by the way for most of us we do celebrate christmas in our own little ways. One of them is how fortunate we are to live in this world that god has given us and the chance that he has given us to form our own opinions. We should all count ourselves lucky that we have the things that we have and at least once a year are able to share our good fortune and our happiness with others. I am 23 and this is going to be the second xmas I have spent away from home (the first I visited my g/f family and it was just as hectic) I plan on sitting around, eating, drinking, and relaxing in the sun (I am in New Zealand, and it's lovely and sunny out). This bring me to another point, having a HUGE roast with all the trimmings may be a great idea in the northern hemisphere, but NZ have copied this tradition, and so on xmas day we all sit down at my grandmothers place (after visiting about 4 other families) and have an enormous roast... now I don't know about you, but I don't really enjoy eating a large hot meal when it's 30 degrees celcius outside! I hate the way that xmas is becoming less and less about family and stuff, and more and more about commercialism... Everybody has sales, all the latest bits come out, movies come out, it just gets a little much. And also, I have been pressured for nearly a year since I told my family that I was going to spend xmas away from home again, to go home for xmas... "We'll miss you" "Why aren't you coming" then the emotional blackmail "Don't you want to spend time with us?" It's just too much. So in conclusion, the idea behind xmas is a good one, but there are too many people trying to make money off the weaknesses of people around this time of year, and that's wrong. PS. I myself do not believe in god, and I am not a pagan, so I feel that I don't need to celebrate it. Then I truly feel sorry for you. I admit, I've become pretty jaded with the holiday season over the past few years. But I still realize that if for nothing else, Christmas is for the kids, and I do everything in my power to make sure my neices and nephews enjoy Christmas. Yeah, maybe it has become over-commercialized over the years, but not everyone buys into it. Some of us just sit back, and enjoy the looks on the kids faces as they tear into present after present, and have fun with their new toys. And what's so bad about a holiday where we all set aside our problems and take a couple of days to care about our fellow man? Personally, I've been volunteering at our local soup kitchen a couple of nights a week since Thanksgiving. My girlfriend talked me into it with her, and I honestly feel like a better person, doing something to help those in need. Algorithm, I'm not going to be like some of the others and tell you that you're wrong for feeling the way you do. You are fully entitled to your opinion, and I respect it. But if you can't see even one iota of joy in the Christmas season, then I have every right to feel sorry for you. ------------------ Clatu...Verata...nnnn...necktie...nectur...nickel. ...it's definately an "N" word... AggroZone December 13th, 2000, 03:52 PM For those who are negative about xmas,... quit being so uptight. Quit dwelling on what everyone is doing around you, and do what makes you feel good. Whether it's sitting around at the parents house, having a kegger with your friends, worshipping some kind of fictious being all day, or just hanging out at home by yourself. Whatever,... it can be anything. I usually like to wake up, take a shower, go check and see if Santa left me a hot Swedish bikini model under the tree, find out he didn't and then go to my parents house and get lots of cool stuff. Then I'll go home afterwards and party with my friends. But one thing I've given up on is whining about the commercialism of the holidays because it's a waste of my energy. Either accept it, ignore, or do something about it, and then move on. I'm just glad we have these holidays so I can take a break from work once in awhile... By the way, this year I want to wake up to a, gift wrapped with only a single bow, nude Carmen Elektra laying next to me in my bed. Is that too much to ask for?? Well, I was raised as a Christian though I'm not entirely sure how much I agree with some of the Christian's teachings. However, I tend to look at X-mas like this: 1. It's at least 1 day of paid holiday time (this year we get 2, woot!). 2. While the X-mas season is overly & insanely hyped by the marketers; it's still a time that people around the world get together and share in a spirit of good will & cheer. Sure it would be great if we did this 365 days a year, but let's face almost nobody does. So rather than get nasty over people who get into the holiday spirit only around the holidays; I say rejoyce in the spirit of the season and if that doesn't work... Well, in this holiday season there's usually plenty of parties w/ spirits to drink. ------------------ You did what? I'm sorry but that's not supported. Snommis69 December 14th, 2000, 08:58 AM This may sound strange, but I have pretty much everything I need to be happy. I do not get real mushy for the holidays, but the past year has been pretty damn good on all fronts for me and my family, romantically, personally and professionally. I really like the phrase "Want what you have". ...*SNIFF*...I love you guys!... If I had to get materialistic, a digital cam would be super cool! ------------------ Is the damn thing plugged in, is the damn thing turned on? kennethstarrfp December 15th, 2000, 01:52 PM To CobraTekMax, With your wishes you should be in the assasin business! All in all the things that come in nice wrapping paper with a dollar value attached do not bring peace or happiness with them - they are just more junk - so once again - doesn't matter. carrienscott December 20th, 2000, 02:11 PM I would like one of those new sureburn drives from Plextor and a firewire card for my new digital camcorder... ------------------ It's a dog eat dog world out there and I'm wearing milk bone underwear.
