We all groan when we go to do a job in the field, and see the computer buried under a mess of papers, beanie babies, candy wrappers, etc. But, are we any different? Do we practice what we preach?

We have cleaning ladies at work who keep my desk nice and tidy. But at home, my Duke Nukem action figure guards my always open case, while Solid & Liquid Snake fight to the death on top of my Cambridge Sub. And the new pride of my collection, Ash from the Evil Dead Series, sits on top of my monitor ready to hack some deadites up.

So, what kind of junk do all the other techs out there have on and around your machine(s)?

from left to right,
cd rack stuffed full and over flowing (some disks on top of the thing),some floppies and some more cd's on the desk, floppy case or 2 (some extras strewn around the desk in a haphazard fashion. assorted case parts (ie; bay covers that are no longer in use) small pocket knife for opening envelopes and stubborn miouse bottoms. on the monitor i have a vietnam era replica of a huey gunship on one side and my stuffed Y2K bug on the other. my zip drive on the right side of the monitor stand, zip disks some in cases, some not. blank cd's on a spindle, joystick, air freshner, empty cd cases, stapler, hole puncher, calculator file folders a couple of bills, and assorted papers with notes of various things that seemed important at the time i wrote them. on far end of the desk is my bag with assorted screwdrivers and utility/software disks as well as the always present soldering gun, solder and a few of the most common sizes of cmos batteries.

lmao, its really not as messy as it sounds (i have a rather large desk that i built for the purpose!) but it would and has appeared to be so to some who have seen it. beside like MS, i have my own proprietary file system.

Okay, if we're gonna discuss what's UNDER the desk as well, I might as well mention my big jumble of power cords, speaker wires, and printer cables that I have lovingly nicknamed "fire hazard". Also, I forgot to mention my Jabba the Hutt beanie, and my half dozen or so ashtrays. http://63.236.72.252/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif

Tools, candy wrappers, soda cans, PC Gamer and other assorted CD's, sticky notes, printouts, a pair of headphones, untold numbers of pens and pencils (though I can never find one when I need one), enough floppies to tile a floor with, and the carcasses of eight dead Western Digital hard drives. There's a computer in there somewhere too.

That's just what's on top of the desk. I won't even venture to guess what's under it.

Open computer case (to control the heating caused by overclocking my P2-350 128 MB PC100 SDRAM 100 FSB to P2-466 128MB of PC100 SDRAM running at 133) with an external parallel port ZIP drive sitting on the upper CD-ROM drive and three CDs (Phil Vassar, Who wants to be a millionare (not even mine) and Puzzle Bobble 2 along with a ZIP in the drive and one on top of the CDs with a floppy too. Two CLC manuals with two more CDs on top, Warcraft and Lords of the Realms II and a book I haven't gotten a chance to read since classes started.

To the left of my open computer is a cabinet door to keep my cat (who keeps going behind my monitor) out of my computer. Then there's the monitor with the labtec satalite speakers wedged below it (the sub woofer hides some of the cords that spill out below my computer).

The power strip/surge protector is laying on the edge of my makeshift computerdesk and a night stand I use for my computer junk. I have a Microsoft racing wheel on top of the nightstand and two joysticks and a throttle control on top of a pile of boxes in the corner (next to the nightstand that partially holds the power strip).

My keyboard is in a small metal case that sits on the desk (an old wooden student desk) and under my computer and monitor.

My chair is older than time itself, a really cheap dinning room table chair, green with flowers and metal legs I've had to bend a couple times. The keyboard tray is littered with papers, pennies, a pencil, a wrapper from a granola bar, a wrapper from a band-aid, two floppies, an old sticky pad with Ultima 4 info, and an old key that I have no clue as to where it came from.

There's no room on the keyboard tray for a mouse so that's on a black cabinet door (matching the one guarding my computer from my cat) that's held down by a scanner covered in papers. The mouse pad is Yoda and beside it are three cups one inside the other that are dirty, a salt shaker, a Rush cassette that hasn't worked right in years and a single clean cup (will wonders never cease, something clean!).

The other computer's case is closed but it has all kinds of junk piled high on it.

I guess I should clean one of these years http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif

Wow. You guys make me feel normal. Here I thought I was the only one with dozens of unmarked flopies, CDs and CDRs. I gave up mice and trackballs as they take too much room (need the room for useless junk) so now I use a mouse pen. Sometimes hard to find! If my customers saw my desktop they probably wouldnt trust me around their systems. But then I have help with my mess as everything that breaks in the house from remotes to hair dryers find their way to my desk. Oh well who said it was a perfect world

On top of desk - Mass Clutter and about three ashtrays.

Under the desk, a true fire hazzard. Tangled cords, papers that have fallen, a gas and break pedal, and just enough kindling of pet hair and dust bunnies that one spark could set the whole thing ablaze!!
