I have a Dell Laptop with a 12.1"TFT display, the other day while in use the screen got brighter and brighter now it cannot be seen at all. The pc is still works with an external monitor. Is the display stuffed or am I overlooking something?
Any ideas greatly apprecited.......

Not 100% sure, but it sounds to me like the light element burned out, especially if it got brighter and brighter then went out. If you open the display panel, near the brightness and contrast controls is a short glass tube on the right hand side of the LCD. The glass tube has two wires, one on each end. You should be able to unplug this and get a replacement pretty cheap. It's basically a small fluorescent bulb. Give that a shot. You may have to call the manufacturer for a part number, or get onto their website. But I'm fairly certain they are inexpensive, at least less than $20 US.

Thanks for the tip, although I don't know that it's burnt out as stuck full on as the screen is almost pure white...

Becarful when working on the Dell displays the connectors from the display screen to the modulator board on the side of the screen breaks easy. I have had to change a lot of them for my company, were the users have just grabbed the display in the area where the modulator is and while closing the top and have broke it.

screen black all the time- light or invertor
screen white - data cable unplugged/faulty or faulty screen circuitry, odds are data cable faulty
