I have a suggestion, although, I can't recall the last time a had a system just freeze solid.

Run the system in vga 16 color mode for a while. Use windows 98/95 generic display driver. See if that helps. At least you'll have an idea of whether or not it's a display driver issue.

I have had this happen useing the intel 740 chipset boards and for no reason other than subtituing another agp card it would work the first time it was rebooted.using a pci card 4meg it worked every time. each time the agp was reinserted it would redetect and work the first time. End result was odd i removed it from device mgr and cold rebooted ,it redetected, and was fine afterwards.

sounds like resources...drop the system into safemode if it runs here go to the device manager display adaptor\properties\resources and remove the check from "use automatic settings"
