January 11th, 2001, 08:47 AM
I am sorry to inform you but this is going to be my last post upon Windrivers.
I did not want it to come to this but I have been recieving obscene email's from users of the forum (all of them people that I have never spoken to or even heard of, using false return addresses). Another reason for me to stop posting is that I have been with this site since early 1998 and have stuck by it in thick & thin, but I have seen, since Service911 (now internet.com) have taken over that it has turned into a free-4-all on the forums. I used to treasure coming here and helping others out and being appreciated, but now it has just got silly with all the unregistered users flaming the real techs, that most of the time, there is very few postings that I actually read.
I would like to thank Scott in a massive way for allowing me to offer a hand with the forums and also to AlienDyne, ShawnMT, MzCPU, and all the other old faces upon the forums for supporting me along the way.
Sorry that it had to come to this people, but I hope that you can understand were I am coming from.

Well, in light of all this, all the forums are now for registered users only. Also, upon registering, a unique email is required and a password will be sent to all new users to that email address.
Do we want to see email addresses not shown in the profiles, because I can make them dissapear??? Let me know!

I would have to agree about the degradation of these forums and it sad to see you go. You are about half the posts in the Tech2Tech forum. I don't think this site will ever be the same, there is no respect anymore it seems, but that holds true for our society(well, American society, I make no judgements on places I haven't experienced).
This place is gonna be empty now.......

Sorry to hear you have to go, but I agree with your cause, there are millions of computers out there with billions of problems, you would think people could respect this site and give thanks to all the great techs, like yourself, that help contribute to make this site what it is. Keep in touch with us!!! Later.

Because a bunch of lowlife, sniveling, whiney cowards who are so low, they hide behind a fake address, a good person, Darren , is treated like a dog for now other reason than amusement for a bunch of boneheads. If any of those spineless cowards read this, LEAVE US ALONE and go back to your pathetic lives. We need people like Darren to make things more interesting for us techs and to learn more every day. I am sad to see you go Darren and you will sorely be missed.

I let the moderators see my e-mail address but not the general public...I hardly ever get any unwanted/junk mail.
Anyway, truly hope you stick around...there is always a need for a super tech!

I agree with everyone else. When I became a registered user, I thought this was better than sliced bread. Recently I have been noticing a somewhat down fall as i read the constant flaming of one's ability to pilot a computer. We all had to start somewhere. We all did not know how to work on computers. Some of the younger Techs do not know how to navigate DOS because they never had to. With the advent of newer operating systems and newer GUI's, not every can learn DOS, UNIX, O/S 2, etc... so why bash some one if they don't know how to run commands.....yet. People just need to understand and sit there humbly whenever some one does not know how to use their PC, or when a Tech does not have all of the answers. I have seen the posts that Darren has left and it saddens me to see someone with that much knowledge get "fed up" with all of the mudslinging. I hope this post enlightens some people.

I'm a newbie to this site...but Darren, you've given me a lot of great information to absorb just by scanning your replies. Although I understand your reasoning, and must admit I'd leave in a minute, too, if I'd gotten some of that crap sent my way...may I suggest a "super-hero alter-ego." You can wear a mask and a cape, I'll buy! No one need know your new identity! And to all you "veterans" out there, here's one more vote of sincere apppreciation. Although many possess good technical skills, you all do it with panache, politeness and humor. Maybe the registration-required policy will do the trick. For future reference, what about a strict "ignore policy" directed towards tactless boobs?!

Wow, I knew things were getting strange on these boards but, to make a vet. like Darren leave? And the e-mails? I guess I am glad that I am a middle of the road tech cause I have only gotten 1 nasty e-mail and I could hardly understand it. (had to paste it to word and run spell check). I have gotten alot of good emails though and I have never felt uncomfortable with leaving my address public.
On a more personal note, I have sometimes not agreed with things that Darren had posted but everything he posted had a reason and something to back it up and I respect that more than anything. Darren, do what you think you have to do but know that your advice will be missed!!

For your information guys, Darren was the first who replied to my first post here.
Then, after some months, he quit working as a Tech (Correct me if I'm wrong, Darren).
His name wasn't shown as a Moderator, but as a Member. Then suddenly he returned!
This made everyone happy! One of the best (if not THE BEST) was back!!!
Now, because of some of us, he's leaving again and I don't know if he will EVER return!
I won't start thanking Darren, because I need too much space to thank him for his 1435 replies!!!
Let me just say that Darren isn't just a very good Tech. He is THE BEST!!!
It makes me sad watching the best gone!
Thank you Darren for everything! I wish you the best luck!!! We will all miss you!!!

think once - we all have been Non Members when we first started using this BB.
We all as Pretty much all of us - need the help of other Techs, even for a second opinion.
Helping Young Techs is a must. When you are helping someone you basically help yourself (if this tech done a good job on someone's computer and you crossed by it so there you have it.).

AGREED.
Without registration, it's left open for abuse.. the other day there was a completely weird, funny and inappropriate post by some unregistered lamer in the CDROM forum...
Some of you may have seen it, if so you know what I'm talking about. It made me laugh at first but now I realize it was stupid and we don't need that kind of BS here.
If somebody is absolutely serious about seeking help/assistance/advice there should be no problem in asking people to register. Most understand why this is necessary and the rest can get lost. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm21.gif

Darren, I have to echo the sentiments of nearly everyone who posted and completely agree with them in that you will be sorely missed. I have learned a great many things from you and even if your answer did not work in itself, it usually led to a solution. I think most of the long timers are voices of reason and sanity in an otherwise crazy technical world. I am a relatively new member, but I have come to think of most of you guys as friends. These forums have been a sounding board, a gathering of a group of diverse people who had a mutual interest. I have always read with interest any of the opinions the moderators and other long timers have, because I think they are usually pretty well thought out. Between any group of people there will always be a difference of opinion, but that is what makes life interesting. I am truly sorry to see one of the best techs leave due to the ignorance of some intellectually and socially challenged individuals. Do what you feel you must, but don't be a stranger. Peace.

I setup an email address on my mail server and set it so the max messages it can hold is 1. I keep 1 email in it at all times, and everywhere I go online that asks for your email address, I use that one, it just gets bounced back to them anyway!
Legitimate places like here I give my real work address, then I have a home email address that only is given to friends and family.
