Hey, does anyone know where (in which directory) the HTML profile info in Aol Instant Messenger is stored? Not AOL the cr@p internet dis-service that we hate, but the tool we like and use to chat with our buddies online.
I need revenge on somebody, and it involves changing their profile. ;) :D :p

Ok, all I want to do is change a AIM profile. As I understand it, the profile is a special HTML file, stored on the hard disk of the computer that the account was set up on. I don't know the folder where the file was, and that's what I wanted to know.
Now, if my assuption is correct, then the file is on my hard disk (the account being on my computer) The account is my brother's, I just want to change his profile to say something stupid. But, the file is on my computer so technically this is mine, and anyways, I can't see how changing a file on my own computer that I personally own paid for own the rights to the software etc is in any way hacking. I'm not attemping to do anything but change a single text file.
Now, if this is crossing some line I'd be happy to delete the post, but I feel that I'm not breaking any rules. If a mod feels this post should be deleted then okay, but I'm not doing it because I feel that I am okay right now.

I always assumed that the profile wasn't stored on the hard drive. I may be missing something, but if the profile is stored on the hard drive of the machine the account was originally created on, wouldn't the profile be inaccessable if the user signed onto another computer in a different location?
I don't know, just what I always thought.

You're right. It is stored on AOL's network, just like your buddy list is now.
They did this so you can access AOLIM though other computers without having to re-do everyhting every time.

Last time I checked it was not stored on the server and it could be found in:
WINDOWS\aim95\SCREENNAME\info.htm
hope that helps :)

how is someone who goes by the handle "daemon" going to be so prudish? geeez buddy, have a sense of humor. if this is the kind of message board where you can't even share a laugh about pulling a harmless little computer prank on a buddy, then i'd be very disappointed.

Guess I was wrong. I looked and there is an info.htm file in the Windows\Application Data\AIM\SCREENNAME folder. It seems to be that AIM looks for that file when you sign on and updates the profile then. I guess if you go to a different computer, your profile wouldn't be there.
But I edited the file and tried my name on AIM and my profile didn't change. Signed off AIM and back on and the new profile was there.

Thanks, I found it in WINDOWS\appdata\aim\SCREENNAME\info.htm but your info help pinpoint it.
The joke went over well, he discovered it yesterday, and now I'm all over for April revenge - Within a week!
