You don't need any drivers to use it as a CDROM in Windows, only for DOS. The ASPI drivers that allow it to write CDR/CDRW discs come with the writing software and will be installed when you install the software. I would disconnect the DVD and set the CDRW to master, then see if Windows recognises it. If so, you'll have to put the DVD on as either a secondary or primary slave. Also, you could go to Device Manager and disable DMA for the DVD drive (if enabled) - see if that makes any difference. Also check your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files to ensure no DOS CD drivers are being loaded.

You should really put the CDRW on master (2nd ide) and the DVD as slave (2nd ide).
Software would have come with the cdrw, installing this would load the right stuff.
the NEC website did not produce any info because I need more info such as exact product reference code.
sorry cannot be more helpful. ;)

Hmm...could possibly be a drive letter assignment problem. Does the POST screen show both the DVD rom and the CDRW drive before booting commences? If running Win98, create a boot disk and then boot from it and see if the default DOS cd driver picks up two drives or one. Also check config.sys to see if there is a line something like:
LASTDRIVE=Z
If so, remove it - its not needed. It may possibly say LASTDRIVE=D which would be the cause of your problem.
Also, go to Device Manager, select the DVD drive and hit properties. See if the 'Reserved Drive Letters' boxes have anything in them, change the 'End Drive Letter' if it isn't blank already.
If your running TweakUI (or any of the Tweak progs) see if it has a drive enable function, TweakUI's is under the 'My Computer' tab. Make sure the relevant drives are ticked (all mine are, right down to Z).
Some last questions:- when you power up, does the CDRW drive light flash? Any noises from the drive? Does the tray eject and close when the eject button is pressed? Do you definately have a 100% good IDE cable?
To be honest this is really scratching at straws, hope something comes to light. If still no joy then i'd remove the drive and test it in another PC.

ok......
I have ASUS CUSL2 MB
I have CDRW hooked up as secondary master and DVD on secondary slave.
boots up fine DVD and CDRW are listed
but Windows still doesn't recognize....
in device manager it says something wrong with my secondary ultra ATA controller....
says its not fully installed or something....
when i have both drives hooked up.
when i have both drives hooked up on secondary ide....doth drives aren't recognize.
but when i only hook up the dvd as secondary master it is recognized
I tried just hookin up the cdrw as secondary master but windows still don't recognize it.
it didn't say this before when i only had DVD drive installed.
I did the tweakui thing and checked all the letters

go here: http://www.asus.com/products/motherboard/driver.html
get the ide controller drivers/ mobo drivers and download.
go to safe mode
delete the ide 1st and 2nd controllers
reboot
let windows detect... if and when prompted, say you have disk... load drivers just downloaded.
when you have the cd only, windows detects it is a cd and uses the standard cd drivers.

dont know what feurio is.. i use nero - i would get that, its shareware!
if you really want it, check compatibility - uninstall and reinstall.
is this cdrw new or used? (consider it may be faulty?) ;)

I'm having exactly the same problem with the same drive that I ordered online. My machines (Win 2k and Win 98) can detect the CDR, but dont detect it as a cd-writer. I'll let you know if I get something figured out.
BTW, no software came with the drive, it's am OEM piece.

Windows does not see all cdrw as cdrw, just as cd-rom. Its the software that makes windows work for some drives, (plaxtor and Teah come to mind).
Just a thought...

I finally found something on a compariable model of CDR http://www.nec.se/drivers/cd_rw_ide_e.html
It is supposed to work with available software, but I'm still having a hard time detecting it as a CDR.
