I have recently done a clean install of Windows 2000 professional. I've previously had Windows ME installed but decided to go for a more stable operating system. Anyways, I've got a Creative Labs 12x10x32 cdrw burnproof writer that has always worked fine before. Now though, when I attempt to copy a cd using Nero 5.5 (same as I used to), the cd will copy but the read buffer will continue to decrease fairly rapidly and then stops the cd from copying. The buffer fills back up again, copying continues and the same thing continues to happen. A full 12x burn used to take around 7 mins when I used WinME, and now it takes roughly 13-14 mins because of this problem. This is very frustrating. What can I do to remedy this problem, besides go back to Windows ME?

sounds like you are running out of either a) memory, b) disk space.

if i recall, Nero uses the hard drive to buffer info; if that is full then the job will slow to a crawl.

the creative site gives the min specs: http://www.creative.com/cdrw/products/cdrw121032/require.asp

whats your system specs?
have you got the latest drivers?
how much spare space have you?

BTW the creative site also says there are no win2000 drivers:
http://www.creative.com/cdrw/support/drivers/welcome.asp?reg=2&OS=Win2k&prod=cd_rw&Select=Get+Files&x=62&y=7

so what drivers are you using?

My machine: AMD K6-2 400, 192mb Ram, 20gb hdd (12gb free), SBLive!, Voodoo3.

I meet the minimum specs, yes. Harddrive space is more than adequate. I think I've found the problem - my harddrive seems a lot slower through Windows 2000 than on WinME, so it might not be keeping up with buffering. I've resorted to reinstalling WinME now anyways, thanks all the same. :)

well, you're right about the buffering, just because w2k is a lot more meaty and with the system you have, would get a bit bogged down. no offence to you! ;)

good luck with the reinstall of ME...

I guess I was wrong. I've reinstalled ME, and I'm still getting the same problem. However, it only seems to be happening when I make my own compilation music CDs. I never did have this problem before, and I dont know why its happening now because I've not changed anything on my system. Any more suggestions?

Is the original problem preventing you from making cd's?

It doesnt prevent me from completing CD's, it just slows the process down so it takes twice as long as it used to (because once the read buffer depletes it has to fill back up again before burning resumes). Please help, its so frustrating.
