Ok im setting up a little network. Both units will see each other and both can transfur files. I tried to set them up for internet sharing and i have done it 100 times before and the client unit will not use the host for the internet sharing. I tried running winipcfg and it gave me the error "failed to initialize Winsock." I tried reinstalling windows 98 SE and removing all network devices and clients and still no luck. Please help.

Please help.<hr /></blockquote>Is the Portal PC using a 3rd party Firewall program? I had similar programs when running ZoneAlarm. I disabled it and then it worked fine.

take a look at this microsoft article. it may have to do with your problem. hope that helps

What's wrong with typing "ipconfig" from a good old fashioned DOS Prompt? :D <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

check your client pc set for the IP address automaticall/or specify, if set to specify, It should be set to automatic with the server set to specify. I have set this up a quite a few times and on a couple of occasions when it wont work this has been the fix.

<hr /></blockquote>when specifying an adapter to release or renew under dos, it's as simple as a number. ie ipconfig/release 1 It's not like you have to know the mac address or anything.

I agree it's easier to use winipcfg. I just wanted to point out that you can indeed use IPCONFIG to release and renew ip addresses even under win9x
