We have used several diagnostics on our new, internal Digital Research 40X IDE CD Rom drive. Once running -- and only when it chooses to -- it runs fine. But, even after cold and warm reboots and just putting it in with "auto run" checked in Win98, Windows comes back with the message "E: Drive is not accessible." and "The device is not ready." Does anybody know what could be going wrong? After all, "sometimes" it is able read the CD Rom perfectly!

Have you tried the drive in another machine and with another cable? Sounds like a flakey drive to me. I have had the same problem with multiple samsung drives. I will assume that you are not talking about burned cds not reading. Havent used a digital research before but if it does it in multiple machines, after you are certain that there is no patch/firmware update/new driver I would chunk it and get a nice shiny new mitsumi 48x. You could RMA it but cdroms are hard to rma and if it's just one I would trash it. Oh yeah - make sure you smash the hell out of it first :)
