HELP! I have an OLD computer and it has a Sony CDU33A connected to a sound card. When I first installed Windows ME everything worked -- then I started to try to install another hard drive onto a Promise Ultra 33 card -- and now the CD ROM isn't mapped to a drive letter -- it is not in the system on control pannel in normal mode but it is in Safe Mode -- any ideas?

In older PCs if they are connected to the IDE on the soundcard its resources are usually setup through the soundcard software in DOS.
It could be the assigned resources are causing problems by the installation of the new Ultra card, you could try altering them and see if it helps any.

I had the ultra card in when I switched to ME. And I currently do not have any drives plugged into the Ultra card -- but still nothing.

If I were you I would probably try a fresh install of windows or at the very least use win ME system restore or Norton Ghost to send the pc back to when it all worked properly at the very least.

I can't reinstall it -- I get get the system to get to the CD -- and the oldest system restore doesn't fix it.
thanks for the suggestion

This suggestion is right on the money. Find out who makes the soundcard. Then go the website of the manufacturer and try to locate the instructions on how to configure the IDE port. Also you might need some software to download as well.
When you set the IDE port on the card, the resources it uses should be hard set, and will not be Plug n Play friendly. It is kind of like a legacy device. You may have some resource conflicts going on.
A few older ESS cards were like that. The utility was kind of a pain to configure.

Just a suggestion but you could reinstall the CD as slave to the master hard drrive and format the PC.Then copy the cab files tothe hardrive, reset up your system as before then install from the hardrive cab files.
