Hi, how comes that Darrens name has changed to Machiavelli in recent topics? There are more changes like 'Cobra!' changes to 'Cobrage'...
Is this a bug or can anybody change his own name (so I have learn the ID numbers! ... that will be a bit annoying) ?

Everybody can change his own names.
Probably the topics Darren shows as 'Darren Wilson' and not as 'Machiavelli' are kid of old and the UBB hasn't "refreshed" them yet.
That's the only explanation I can give.
You can change your own name using the option from your profile page.

Most people don't change their avatar often, so that's another way to ID members.

so it's not necessary to call someone by his name anymore as long as you don't call him by his ID ... very strange for a group of people...
alas: Hi 192, 775 and 2974 (not to mention all other numbers)... do you really think then it makes sense to subscribe? I don't think so...

If you follow along you can tell quickly who's who. It's only in the tech longe where personalities change the advice in the other forums is still good and I don't think a anme has anything to do with the help they are giving you.

... it has something to do with familiarity ... but I won't disturb the way to anonymity where the mob can't interfere with the cracks...

Actually, the DB just stores the actuall post info, and then the internal ID of the poster. Soooo If you view a post that Darren replied to last week, it will show his new name and Sig.
It would be inefficient to store all that info every time...

I don't see any change in the near future..
you know what they say:
Once a condor always a condor :)
and unless someone makes me a better avatar (I doubt it..) I'll stick with it..
the only thing I change from time to time is my signature and my special status..
still I'm going to be myself for a while longer..

That's not quite true... when I look at my profile I see my login name and my public displayed name - so why do we have this (unchangable?) login name ?
Perhaps somebody can interchange these two database-entry-names ... it will be an hour work for a professional guy do set the displayed name to the login name, right?
I'm sorry to say this, but without personalizing postings (with fixed names!) it makes just 10% enjoyment and I think I'll return to the watching crowd (if at all...)

You may change your public view name all you want but your log is visable to mods and the Admin always! (Higg)

I never doubted this ... but don't standard people (non-mods, non-admins) feel more comfortable to KNOW the names of their communication partners? If you mods know each other - fine! I just can't see the sense... and the names worth nothing like that...
Oh well ... I read that somebody mentioned these fine avatars ... but I can't say "Hi avatar.gif your answer was good but..."
... oops! that's not right: I CAN say "Hi <img src=http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum3/avatars/custom/5723.gif> ... you really want us to talk/write like this?"
This topic is not to anger you mods ... it just makes me feel uncomfortable to talk to others while not sure about their name ... Mr.Jimmr/5723/jimmr13/jimmr1/.../(whatelse)
BTW: hope you don't post my password only to show me YOU can - I beleive it without probe, I'm an admin too... just on a planet somewhere else...

...and I can imagine that it's particularly tough when someone changes their name & avatar at the same time....

So 3400 what's the purpose of a name? Don't you use it to call and identify someone? Am I the only one in the world who does this procedure... *shake head* ?
Why do you you think there exists DNS in the Internet? Isn't it to better identify numbers by speakable names (so you have a better chance to remember them)? How do you call your girlfriend ... 666 ? Would she appreciate that?
Well as this all that seems to make no sense for anybody I think I'm landed on the false planet - could that be the case?

That's making seach engine here in Windrivers forums less usefull being compared
with what used to be. I cann't remember all member's id numbers having to seach for reply posted by member XXXX. LoL, I don't even remember my own member ID when doing search!
