Have an older Dell Dimension with a missing side panel on the case. Got a $30 ATX250 for replacement but it doesn't quite work. There are two problems: 1) The older power supply is 230W and has 2 power connectors (are these p8 and p9?), the newer is 250 and has one; 2)the switch cable on the dell case is integrated (i.e., HDD led, power on, power led are all on one cable). I raised eyebrows at these when I got the new case but I'm stuck because someone else in the company signed for the new case and it is damaged (scratched in shipping) to the point that I can't send it back. What can I do? I'd like to avoid spending an obscene amount of money on an original Dell case. Thanks !

The P8 and P9 are the old AT power supply plugs. The case would be AT (converting these to ATX is not even worth the $40 to buy a new one). The most you'll be able (want) to do would be upgrade he AT equipment...can the thing or go crazy making a wicked case mod :)

First, in regards to the PSU, it sounds like the old power supply was an AT power supply for older motherboards and the other is an ATX power supply for newer motherboards. You can consult your motherboard documentation to find out which it is. There is a good chance, however, that the case was only designed to fit an AT motherboard and if you attempt to fit a newer motherboard in there it will not fit or there will not be proper supports to screw the motherboard in. Also, many proprietary cases do have a proprietary switch assembly to be plugged into the motherboard. I am guessing this was what you were speaking of. There should be a few connectors needed for the switch and the leds. The best suggest I can make is to make new ones. You can cut the connector off those wires and splice new connectors to them. The best ones are those old "Turbo" switch connectors that aren't really needed anymore.
