I recently built a small server for my company to run a new mailing program I wrote. My boss insisted on using some nothing case he got cheap. Well, you have to keep the boss happy, so I ordered the parts I needed and built the system. I was running two Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm drives in a RAID configuration. Needless to say they got damn hot. Too hot to touch, and that was after running for about two hours.
I checked the temperature and the processor was running at about 148F and the system at 125F. Unacceptable. So I found some hard drive coolers. Best investment ever made. I love these things. The Coolermaster Cool Drive.
The unit consists of an aluminum casing that the HDD is mounted to and a high speed ball-bearing fan mounted in the front. The whole unit mounts into a 5 1/4" bay for airflow. The front plate is removable with a small screen covering the fan keeping dirt from clogging the fan.
The end results...CPU temperature is now 114F, and the system temp is 84F. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/biggrin.gif

And for days we survived on nothing but food and water...
