I have a 1.33 Ghz Athlon, Asus a7a266 mobo, 256 MB DDR...the temp goes to 140 F and above in a matter of minutes...tried two different fans and have thermal grease on it...any suggestions?

I have a question for you
Did you remember to take all the plastic tape off the bottom of the heatsink
many people have forgotten

Tried a BIG fan?

Leave the side of the case - great for ventilation.

Ribbon cables hanging over fan?

tape is off, tried the side off the case. When i clock it down to 1000 Mhz it runs at 134 degrees F. (which I assume is ok), but as soon as i go back to 1.3 it jumps to 140 F. Something wrong with cpu or just need a bigger fan? What is the proper temp for this chip to be runnung?

what fan do you recommend...price is not an issue...i want this thing to run cool. I'm not much into overclocking, but I want a fan that will suffice for now and if I decide to clock it up later

Is it a mid tower or a full tower case

sounds like you might need better airflow
try adding a few case fans as well

U need a Swiftech MC-462!!! Go here for a review:Neo Seeker (http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rid=34849) It's about $80 but based on the review, it's worth EVERY PENNY!!!

I agree - one of the best out there. If you have any mechanical aptitude at all, put a big intake fan over the processor on the side of the case (use a big holesaw)and put a big exhaust "blowhole" on top of the case. I use standard best buy fans for this... ...This dropped my cpu temp aboput 7degrees f and my case temp by almost 20...

Operating it with the side cover off won't help much, because you'll disrupt the air circulation.

Did you add case fan?
1 in the front which draws air in.
1 in the rear which draws air out.

You can also make a blow hole, drill a hole on the top, and add another case fan to it.

Taking the side of does massive amounts for mine. I can now turn chassis fans off, and hear the TV!

Replaced the fan with a BIG fan, now the temp is running steady at 134F. This still seems too hot. I have tried with the case on and off. What is an acceptable temp for it to bee running at? Someone at tech support at sed told me to apply thermal grease corner to corner on the cpu...is this right?

Try this, because a co-worker of mine just had this exact same trouble a couple of weeks ago. He tried all of the above to no avail, and was convinced someone had sold him a bad chip. As a last ditch effort, he went to the MB's manufacturer's web site and did a bios upgrade. Problem solved immediately! Good luck.

Right sorry if this offends you but it is a question I have to ask becase *cough* I did this with mine *cough*. Right ready ...

I have an Abit KT7-Raid mobo now hwen you connect up all the fans the SYSTEM FAN is the closest to the CPU NOT the CPU FAN. Check to see if your cpu fan is actually plugged into your SYSTEM fan slot.

Now I admit in my hurry to build my machine I did this and I had exacly the same problem. So give it a go and let me know

here is a fan I use for my 1.2ghz athlon, it also supports 1.4ghz athlons, my cpu stays at 90 all the time never moves.
get it at http://www.sidewindercomputers.com

You need only to apply a small amount of grease on the small rectangular processor itself, not the entire chip. Grease only needs to be where the fan comes in contact with the chip. Too much grease can have the opposite effect.

Can You tell us what you are using for a heat sink and fan.and can you give temps in cel you chip should not go over 60c at full load however amd says 90c is the limit.

There is a fault with ASUS A7A motherboards regarding the thermal monitoring. My thermal readings were way off scale too. You may need to RMA the bloody thing like I did because no matter how much time and effort you put into bringing down the temp you will not get the true thermal readings.

Regarding the best HS/F, I recommend the Globalwin FOP38 with Arctic silver 2. I use one despite the noise and I am now getting thermal readings of 37c/98F CPU temp and 29c/84F motherboard temp after 4 hours of usage on my ASUS A7M. You must also get the air flow right too. A full tower is best for this purpose with an air intake from the front bottom of the case blowing upwards and expelled through the top back of the case. You can find this example at www.amd.com (http://www.amd.com) (recommended air flow)

TBirds are terrific, but when it comes to heat, they're bastards. I can run my 900 at 1G OK with the case open, but with the case on, forget it. You definitely need a big fan for these little tykes

i just put together a 1.3ghz with an ASUS a7a266mobo and within the first 5 secs of my first bootup the cpu fried, i had the fan on the cpu and everything.

if the fan wasnt rated for the 1.3ghz would that have let it fry so fast?
because the fan the place sold me doesnt have any specifications on it.

by the way where can you buy some of them huge fans/heatsinks for a 1.3ghz

THE Thermalright SK6 IS the best if the best,It rates so close to the Swiftech it is funny.

Pure Copper nice 27cfm or 38cfm delta fan.

Go to the heatsinkfactory.com,for 40 bucks it is the best of the best in AMD heat sinks.
