AMD is reporting more and more losses. Intel is still gaining and merced is almost complete. If the Athlon isn't a big success what's next for AMD? They can't just keep losing money, they need to make some to stay alive. Without them what will keep Intel from having $1000 cpu's? Nothing!

If the Athon is a big success will it catch up to Intel? My guess is no. Athlon is for sale at the moment but do you see any ads for it? No. Do you see ads for intel products? Yes. If you know nothing about computers what would you buy? Intel or that Amd computer that I haven't really heard of? You'd buy intel.

AMD is on thin ice at the moment and if the Athlon doesn't bring a lot of profits I think this could be the end of them.

Then you say well what about cyrix? In my opinion they will never be intel standards. Amd is already at intel standards and is about to pass them with the athlon.

Well what do you think? Is this the near end of Amd?

Good points, hopefully AMD will succeed but only if they iron out the small bottlenecks within the chip. I have seen the Athlon in action and it wasn't no faster than the PIII 550 ( Athlon @ 600 ) . If AMD release this chip to the street at the high prices that people are quoting then they won't succeed, if Intel stick to there word and release the next PIII cheaper.

One thing that puzzles me is how can AMD use the Alpha EV6 core for win9x code when before the chip was only usuable windows wise with NT?????? Surely this might explain the MASSIVE amounts of cache that they are shipping wiht the ATHLON when Intel are going to be dropping the L2 cache on the next gen of PIII's to 256Kb ????

What is it that Intel know that the rest of us don't???? I think that if Intel reduce the cache & get faster chips then AMD will certainly fail. Hopefully they won't.
