I have a K-6 2 350 and every so often on startup, I get an error message that says windows protection error, you must restart your computer. Sometimes it says IOS initialization failed (or something like that). When I first got the chip, someone told me to DL a patch from Microsoft. I just wiped my HDD and forgot about the patch. I can't find it now. Can anyone help?

Can anyone help me.
I installed a amd k6 II -450 and I almost always get the windows protection error message when starting windows. I have windows 95(not osr2).Tried the amdk6upd.exe patch but it won't work because it says its not for my version. Everything I have read about it says only happens with osr2. Can anyone please help me.

The 1st version of win95 doesn't have alot of support for the newer processors, boards, agp, usb etc. Most likely 95 is having a problem with the motherboard's chipset. What motherboard is with your k62 450?
Also make sure the voltage for your processor is set at 2.4 volts and not 2.2.
There are alot more errors with that old an operating system. Suggest you get win98 (1st or 2nd edition) and try that out.

Soltek motherboardSL-54U5/u1
the manual says voltage can be 2.2 or 2.4.
On the processor it says 2.2
Thanks for your help! Have been thinking about windows 98,maybe i'll give it a try.

You sure you have a K62-450 processor?
Is it a 400 being overclocked to 450?
I know for a fact that k62 and k63 450's to 475's require to run at 2.4 volts, not 2.2.
I know this because I use alot of these processors in builds.
When you mentioned that your processor is labled to run at 2.2 volts and not 2.4, then that tells me your processor isn't a k6-2 450. So what speed is it really?

Sorry if you've seen this posting in other places but i'm desperate here.

Since installing the patch, Windows now boots up but it has an annoying 3 minutes delay in the bootup. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Cheers,

Yao
