I have a Soyo 5EMA+ mobo, and I've been running the system overclocked at 2.5x with 112 MHz FSB (280 MHz) for a year now with no problems. Decided to get an AMD K6-2 450 to try and increase system performance (4x @ 112 MHz FSB, 448 MHz). Installed new processor, set jumpers and rebooted system. BIOS recognized AMD chip with correct speed and got through the Win98 splash screen. However, a fraction of a second after displaying the desktop, I got a blue screen error saying something about a problem with SCSIPORT.???, and the system froze.

The AMD site says this is a problem with processors running 350 MHz or faster, but only in Win95 OSR 2. It says this problem should not exist in Win98. The MS knowledge database doesn't have anything on this issue either. A friend said something about needing to reinstall Win98 because when it's first installed, it detected the Intel MMX chip and included modules specifically for that chip. When the K6 is installed, the OS isn't smart enough to reinstall the modules needed for the 3DNow!.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry, me again. Didn't mention that I don't even have a SCSI port on the mobo or a card.

What does it do with the chip properly set?

It's me again. I reloaded Win98, and the system worked fine with all my applications, settings, etc. still intact. Also had to reload DirectX and video drivers made for 3DNow!.

I have to say though, this chip has zero overclocking ability. The old Pentium 233 MMX had no problems with a 112 MHz FSB, but this AMD can't handle it. And it couldn't handle the next jump @ 100 MHz to 500 MHz (not really shocked at that one). Unfortunately, I don't have any FSB settings between 100 and 112 MHz. I definitely see that Intel has bigger design margins than AMD, and hence the price difference.

Another good example of you get what you pay for. Not that I'm pissed I can't get tons of extra speed out of this chip. For God's sake, it only cost me $50, the same price I paid for the Pentium it replaced. Just some random thoughts.....

Thanks for the response.

When you overclocked your AMD, did you increase your voltage at all ?
Try upping it by .1 to 2.3v, makes for a better definition between 0's and 1's.

My 450's cheerfuly running at 500

My K6-2/300 is working well only with air cooling at 400 MHz with 2.5 V. Water-cooled, it does even work at 450 MHz/2.7 V. I love that chip!

I will like to upgrade a P233MMX Board it is
a PcChips M537 with an VX Pro 586 Chipset.
the CPU speed Jumpers are50/55/60/66/75
The CPU Internal Clock speed are 2.0/2.5/3.0/3.5 It would take an AMD K5 & K6
Core Voltage are 2.9/3.2/3.5 Volts
Could I use a AMD K6-2 400 or 450 MHz ?
Or the fastest I could use is a 260 MHz.
3.5 X 75. Can any body Help.

I tried to overclock my K62-450 and it wouldnt do it...run it at 4.5*100 and with 100mhz ram of course...and it runs fine..there were different voltages for these processors as well...make sure you have the right voltage settings set correctly

Good Luck...
