Just recently, I have custom built AMD Athlon 700MhZ system. When I first installed windows 98 SE, and then the necessary files and drivers for my video card and sound card, weird occurences started to appear. When I install the liveware drivers for my sound blaster live, windows restarts and says that "windows has encountered an error in the system and will restart and fix the problem." This causes me to panic because windows will recover the lastest backup files, without saving the info on what the latest programs you installed in your system, which is harder to un-install because windows set to its default settings from the start. I have tried many and many ways to get around this problem, but have come to no solution---YET. I try to reformat my hard drive and install win98 SE, and then repeat the same steps, but over and over after i install the liveware drivers to the sound blaster live, there's always a system registry error. Also, I have gone into the bios and disabled the on-board sound, which is a K7M ASUS motherboard, and yes--I have the updated bios. To top it off, i get gameplay freezes in Unreal Tournament, the Sims, and sometimes when I install the Nocturne in my system, i get freezes when it installs during installation, which leaves me no choice but to press the restart button, because CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work. Worst of all, i get those annoying blue screen messages that has occured fatal errors in some part of windows, and to that I have to resolve to a cold reboot with the restart button. Yes I know its a lot of things to bear, but I dont know what to do anymore. I just want to get this done with, so I can play my games.....its starting to get on my nerves that nothing works on my computer!!! Oh yea, here's the specs of my computer. Hope anyone can help. My email address is make7upyours@wrestlezone.com--->have a nice day to everyone.... http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif
make7up's specs to computer:
-AMD Athlon 700MHZ with 3dnow technology
-ATX case with antec 300W power supply
-K7M ASUS motherboard with Yamaha on-board sound(200 MHZ bus)
-ASUS AGP v6600 GeForce 256 Deluxe /w TV out
-Sound Blaster Live! /w LiveWare drivers 3.0
-Pioneer 40x by 10x DVD ROM
-256MB SDRAM cas 8E(double sided ram)
-NEC floppy drive
-Western Digital 7200 UTA66 13.6GB hard drive
-3 COM 56KWinmodem INT
I am going to change the heat sync fan for my CPU, because the brand is an AVID, and found out that this brand is NOT RECOMMENDED because this brand is only used for 500 and 600 MHZ athlons. I just wanted to see if any opinions would help me on the way. Other than that, i guess its working fine, for the moment. Thanks for your time and I hope, HOPE that someone will be of any assistance to this annoying problem. Again, thank you.

I also have the same problem... I have a AMD K7 700, with a K7 pro mb (amd 756 chip set). I have a Annihilator pro (gefore 256) and to get any D3D games to run i had to install AGP miniport 4.61 driver. That worked I can now run the games, but now all games lock up, anywhere from 30 secs to 3 mins. I tryied going down to 1 x and even disabling agp and nothing so far as helped... Any other ideassss
Thanks

...exactly my problem.
What I did to solve it (yes I can run D3D Stuff now) is, in the following order:
- get the latest AGP miniport drivers (4.61)from the AMD homepage (even the ASUS homepage links to them)
- IMPORTANT! Get the NVIDIA reference drivers from NVIDIA.COM for Win95/98 and dump the Creative drivers.
- jumper the I/O voltage from 3.4 to 3.31 volts (should be in the ASUS manual, very easy to do)
- and finally, go into the BIOS and set the BUS clock to 95 MHZ (instead of 100). This is SAD in capital letters, but to me it seems to be a drivers issue. As long as AMD and Creative don't update those drivers, we're stuck to these issues.
If all this doesn't help, get a better power supply for your PC.
I'll welcome any tips and further info on how to solve this!
The End User should NOT be a beta tester for hardware!

Not sure if this helps but:
I have the same card and installed it in a Socket7 board running an AMD 450. I had to tweak a few settings in the bios to get it to run. This was all according to the drivers I downloaded from Creative.
1st. Make sure there is an IRQ assigned to VGA
2nd. Disable VGA Pallette Snoop
3rd. Disable video bios cache and video bios shadow.
4th. Disable C800-CBFFF Shadow
5th. Make sure your video appeture is at least half of the installed ram
Again, I do not know if this will help.

By the way. I read this somewhere when loading the driver that were released Mar. 1st. I think it was in the disclaimer.

I have exactly the same problem too. MSI K7 Pro m/b, Athlon 650, Creative GeForce256 Annahilator Pro. No 3D games work at AGPx2, AGPx1 seems reasonably stable with either INVIDIA368 or New Creative Drivers.
Will anybody out there help us? It is a real problem.

Unfortunately, it looks like this is gonna be purely a complaints topic, cause I don't have a solution either, and I have the same type of problem. My pc locks up if I run any hardware acceleration. I have a stealth3 s540 video card instead of a geforce. Diamond is sending me a new card, (after 5 months of trying to contact them I finally had to call their long distance # to get any help). I have done all I know to do, (new drivers, recommended power supply, bios tweaks, etc.), but the only way my pooter will run with stability is to set hardware acceleration on it's second to lowest setting. Of course I didn't intend on buying a crippled computer. UUGGHH. My spec's are:
asus k7m, crucial pc133 sdram, athlon 550, 300 watt sparkle power, diamond mm mx 300 sound, diamond mm stealth3s540 video, and windows 98SE. If I've forgotten anything or anyone miraculously finds a solution, please tell me. msr_rhiannon@bellsouth.net

I seem to have founfd the cure.
Goto www.3dchipset.com (http://www.3dchipset.com) and download (http://www.3dchipset.com/news.asp?date=3/18/00) the Athlon GeForce Utility. If you are using the reference drivers it all seem to work. I use NVIDIA 3.68 drivers with this utility. All games work even with sidebanding enabled. I have tried the Beta 3.77 drivers without success. The creative ASGP wizard does not work with the Athlon either.
Also lokk at www.3drant.com (http://www.3drant.com)
