Gonna install a Sony cd burner on a Compaq Presario 5360 K6-2 450 based pc. Anyone have any experience with this combo? Anything, problems I should be aware of? Thanks in advance.

Did one of those about a week ago , no magic formula , no mystery.Follow your burner makers directions and pay strict attention to your jumper settings and you should have no problem.

Just finished the job. Other than the usual juggling of devices to make things fit, the only glitch was the jumper settings. The Compaq uses the "Cable Select" system. The burner documentation indicated that would be ok. Problem was, win98 didn't like it and hung constantly during boot. Decided to rejumper burner to master and cd-rom to slave and all went well. Can anyone tell me why Compaq uses the "cable select" system. No one else does. Thanks for the advice.

I just realized that I switched cables so I could properly position the burner and the hard drive. Ergo, THAT is why the computer kept hanging. I was trying to use cable select on a non-cable select cable (that does make sense). My bad, but the customer thought I was a genius

you can bypass the cable select on drives by setting the jumpers manually. compaq (as well as most OEM companies) uses this system out of the box because the average user isnt going to be inside the case and drives are normally shipped that way. therefore it is a time saver to leave it the way it is rather than pay an employee to go through and reset all the jumpers.

changeing the jumpers by hand and enter the proper configurations in the BIOS will bypass this and many other annoying OEM habits.
