does anyone know of a prog iether pay/shareware that will convert the (think its) wma type file that microsoft movie maker shreds out.

got a customer who leaves movie maker recording from a camera/tv capture card to his hard drive for security , the prob is that he needs to convert to avi/mpeg and burn on a cd for police use

any clues please.

You might try here. They have some good info and I have converted many a file using TMPGEnc and Virtualdub.

yes your right .WMV ,,,,the machine ive got here with 2k doesnt have it, wheras millenium and xp do. im not sat at the customers computer at the moment so i couldnt remember.
at if anyone suggest a free download , they can bog-off coz its a flaky MS product.although the compression is brilliant ,,,,,,,,i think its summot like 250 hrs with a 10-13g hard drive.

the last time i used it , I got the FULL grand prix proggys (BBC1) 2hrs or whatever ,,,,good quality on a single 80m cdr

WMV is not just a file format that movie maker spits out. It's a streaming video format that is easily accessed over 56k bandwidth, and much easier to create with high quality than mpeg is for quick video's. The only downfall is that it's not considered a standard. Whereas mpeg is. I just created a quick video last night using the WMV video format. It's much better than trying to create a quicktime streaming video. Personally, I don't see the need to re-encode the files you have into mpeg, but if that's what you really want, then you'll have to take the time to read through the TMPGEnc tutorial because it will produce the best quality mpeg files. Also, it really helps to have raw AVI files to start out with because if you start out with compressed files, then you're just going to end up with really crappy resolution after re-encoding from WMV to MPEG.

thanks webhead ,

the "customer" has decided on this format , probly because of the crap software that came with his MM card ,,,ie ability to create in avi only ,,,,no mpeg option
also the size of the AVIs are enormous , something sticks in my mind about dos/windows or mayby just gates putting a 2g limit on those type of files.

the simple job is : customer gives me a "caddy" of an inportant event ie breakin/robbery , and I have to copy it to my h/drive , then convert to a format that can be "seen" on ANY VCD/dvd player or windows machine.

if there are no "events" then he simply deletes the file and starts again.

This is one of the best conversion tools.
There is a free download to try.

You could use Cleaner 5 as well but that's $$$$.

Also - as a side note - any video/digital media questions may be asked in the Digital Cameras/Video Capture forum. One guy - Scuba - knows it all when it comes to video.
