Image capture software...

Howdy,
I'm looking for some software (fairly inexpensive), that will allow me to take still images from my camcorder and keep them on my PC. The camcorder is an older JVC model, not digital, Hi8 I think. I was hoping some of you out there have tried some and could give me some recommendations on which software to buy. I'm also hoping not to have to purchase any special hardware to accomplish this.

Also considering buying a scanner as well to scan old photos, so if anyone has recommendations on that as well, that would be great.

btw, I'm running Windows 98SE if that matters.

How do you intend to connect the video output of your videocamera to your PC?

See, I'm not sure. I'm assuming I would have to buy a capture card or something. I've seen some software that comes with a card or other device to connect to the PC, which I assume would be with standard RCA cable.

What connectors does the camera have we might as well start there.

It has RCA jacks, one for audio and one for video. That's all, from what I can tell.

Depending on your current computer system and what you want to do to it, a video card with RCA video might be a good choice. I've had excellent luck with my ATI Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO card. The software is included in the card that allows still images and video clips. I've used it with Hi8's and even the big old VHS with good results. You will then need an adapter to adapt the RCA audio into a mini-jack type connector and plug it into the sound card--if you desire sound.

Thanks ComputerTech. I like the looks of that Dazzle, I'll probably go with that, as I don't really want to buy a new video card.

Well if it has anaogue connectors, you can get a cable to convert to svhs real cheap, then any old card like a tv card($40 or less?) will give you capture. Not much quality...but cheap.
