I just installed Win2K on my Dell laptop (clean install after FDISK) and everything went fine (Yes, I know. You've heard this before.). However, when I try to run Windows Update, the browser insists on a username and password to enter the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site. It reports a Realm of 3-DNS. What the heck is going on here? I registered my copy of Win2K, so I'm not sure why I get this message. HELP! Thanks in advance!

Peace

One piece of information I forgot to mention is that I am accessing the Internet on my laptop across my LAN using WinProxy 3.0 which is installed on a Dell Dimension (1GHz) running WinME. When I had Win98SE on my laptop, I was able to use Windows Update without the need to enter a username and password.

Another thing I discovered last night is that if I use the laptop's modem and connect directly to the Internet, Windows Update works fine.

I would appreciate any ideas as to where to look for the solution to this problem.

Thanks!

It could be that you have your connection set at the proxy machine to "log on to domain"
Windows update site (as far as I am aware) will not ask for passwords. What yopu are getting is a standard windows networking dialogue box
Or, you could have a LAN connection that is attempting to connect using dial-up?
My bet is your dial-up connection is simply mis-configured

Good luck
