I have a home network with three units. Two are running W2K Pro and the other is running W2K Server. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Server several times in order to practice for my upcoming 70-240 exam but have encountered a problem that is new to me. I currently have an HP 722C printer attached to the unit running The Server software. My other two units can print to this printer with no problem. But, if while logged in on the Server as Admin I open the Printers folder, I do not see the HP 722C listed. And here is the problem. If I select the “Add Printer” icon I get this error message:

“Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable.”

Could someone point me in the right direction to solve this problem? As I said, I have been able to print from the unit running W2K Server in the past but for some reason I can no longer even add the local printer to this box.

Thanks for the Help!

Jeff

are you sure the printer spooler service is running on the server?

OK, so let me get this right. Logged on to server as ADMIN, on the server, not the domain, no printer memory, no can add printer
Logged on as a User (again, local, not domain)(or member of some other group) you can print from server?

If this is correct, you should chect to see if anyone ??? has fooled with the ADMIN permissions on the Local machine.

If you are using, as I suspect, more features of teh server, such as domain security, then you should check what you are logging on to at teh server, that is, the local machine account, or the domain. I have seen people get into problems this way, thinking they are granting domain permissions, when in fact thay are only working on a local account.

So, check out your configuration, and get back with a bit more info? If your server is running 16mb RAM and a 166 processor, do not be surprised at memory problems! (I don't expect this is what you are running, but as you'll see when you progress to Sys Admin functions, most of your time is spent in getting ACCURATE, RELEVANT, RECENT, VALIDATABLE information from Users. Here is an actual report on my Intranet Knowledge Base, from an irate User. Maybe give you a smile!

I had just produced a word document called Snooker Club.doc and saved it to my folder on computer 3 by going through the network. I clicked on X to close the document and got an error message on the screen saying, An error has occurred To continue click on ignore To close click on close, but you will lose what you just saved. I tried clicking on ignore but nothing happened, so I clicked on close and the system hung. I tried pressing Ctrl, Alt and Delete but nothing happened, so I pressed the reset button.

Easy, ain't it!

I was having problems adding a printer to the computer acting as the domain server for my home lab of 3 computers. This computer running W2K Server has a 400Mghz processor and 256 MB of RAM. I have added the printer in question, Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 722C, to this computer in the same scenario. I got the error message while logged in as Administrator locally at the domain server.

Logged on this morning and went to the printers folder only to find the HP 722C already there AND shared just as I left it. Maybe this had something to do with taking the printer offline to practice a few labs-not sure. I just know that it did not show up in the printer's folders nor could I add it or any other printer.

But, everything is working O.K. now.

Thanks for the help!
