OK guys....anyone have a RIVA TNT2 AGP card and an Aladdin5 based motherboard (Mine's an Asus P5A, but I think this is with the chipset mainly) and try to install Windows2000? Well, for me, it doesn't work...ever. Trying to upgrade from 98...it says there's an incompatibility between motherboard and video card. Try a clean install to a clean partition and it'll install...but that's it. I never got it to load and run. I just keep getting a frozen black screen...even trying to boot in Win2K safe mode! Anyway, if anyone can help me with this, so much the better....and if no one can, check your configuration before you try Win2000. http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif

I have a Guillemot Wentor 16 (TNT2) on an ASUS P5a and installed Win2k Pro so it multiboots with win98 (I don't believe in upgrade installations -too much old baggage).
I used the newest Nvidia driver for win2K over at www.reactorcritical.com, (http://www.reactorcritical.com,) and it works fine. The nvidia driver that comes with win2k gave me a black screen but I could get in with VGA mode to make things right.

Forget to mention, I have an AGP card, and those are the Detonator drivers I'm using.

Well, my card is a Viper V770, and I was using the WIndowsNT drivers for it...on your clean install, did you have to put in any additional driver for the AGP port for the ALI chipset?

Of course, whether you did or didn't, I'm gonna try it anyway....but I don't see how it'll work with an upgrade install, which is what I need....it'll take me too long to reinstall everything I need.

hi,

I didn't need to do anything for the AGP bus/ALI chipset, unlike with Win98. BTW, the drivers are Detonator 3.66. Can't think of why there's be an incompatability msg. Are you using the ALI 1.7a BIOS update like I am?

Good luck!

Yeah, I am.....booting worked with the Detonators...as well as Viper's WinNT drivers for the TNT2....however, it locked up when I tried to change resolutions....and it doesn't like the Win9X drivers that support DirectX7. Still...it's progress...not much, but it's progress. Have you tried any other 3D cards on your setup out of curiousity? I may just go get a different one.

Oh, I forgot to mention, that WIn2K detects SOME kind of multimedia controller there, but it can't identify it, even as the TNT2 that it supports direct....that doesn't surprise me, since Win9X couldn't either.

I've had similar symptoms with certain AGP card and Motherboard combinations. I had to try a whole bunch of AGP cards to find one that worked with my motherboard.

Which sort of motherboards were they? Mainly Socket7 or slot 1? What chipset did they use?

By the way, i gave up on an AGP card, just in case it was the port, and grabbed a PCI Voodoo3....once I thought about it, i didn't want my video card stealing my system memory anyway. http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif

I have a 233 MMX, voodoo3 3000 agp, 128Mb RAM, samsung 6x dvd drive, and a top-notch efficient motherboard (albeit cheap!) - i am windows 2000 without a problem... except 1 outstanding bug: my realmagic dvd card needed win2k drivers, got them, no prob there, but my mustek 1200CP scanner doesn't work!! the interface pops up and it even says it's scanning - all i get is a black image as the end result and the scanner hasn't actually done anything. mustek don't have win2k drivers for it yet and i need it working!!! any thoughts anyone?

This really needed a new topic, but here goes. If your scanner comes with particular software, you might want to try that...or some other software for scanning in the image other than what you're using now. Also: Is it a SCSI, USB or (shudder) parallel port scanner?

If it's USB, it may be related to some of the USB problems some poeple (not me, but some) have had with Win2K.

Oh..and since there are no Win2K drivers yet, you ARE using the WIndows NT4 compatible drivers, right? Not the Win9X compatible drivers?
