A customer of mine had just deleted 2 directories' files completly, he's using Novell NetWare SB 4.11, I've already tried FILER but it seem that it didn't help at all, because takes the erased files from DELETED.SAV directory that has been there long time ago, and all that I want is to recover the files he erased today!
Is there any other way to accomplish this?

You can use the salvage command to undelete files, but if the directory containing those files has been deleted, too, I just end up restoring the files off yesterday's tape... if there is a way I don't know of one.

If you haven't tried Novell's knowledge base, give it a try. Solves most of my problems.

I would have looked for the right info for you last night, but I was too tired. I found it this morning. Go to:

This is what you're looking for.

Thank you MacGyver, I've already seen that but the SALVAGE command isn't in use anymore with the NNW 4.11SB, instead I tried FILER but it didn't worked fine. I'd think that that utility was something like Recycled Bin of Win9x (it used to recover deleted files to the original path), and FILER didn't, so I've tried manually to recover them from the DELETED.SAV directory to the original directory, but I don't have all the deleted files, some has been really deleted .

I'm glad you were able to recover some of the files, but explain to your customer that you did your best to recover what was lost, and you got some of them back. I think your SOL here.

The "undelete" functions in Novell are not 100% reliable. If the data on your customer's server is that important to them, then they are crazy for not using a tape backup system NIGHTLY!

We lost our office's Novell server to a physical hard disk failure about two years ago to the day. The drive was cooked so bad, even Data Recovery Labs couldn't do anything with it. And those guys are amazing. If I didn't have a tape backup, we would have been out of business the next day.

Use the salvage command in NWADMIN (Netware Windows Administrator) it does not have the same file fimits that the DOS FILER does. The path for this program is \\"servername"\sys\public\nwadmn3x

Thank you all, I already fix that thing (kind of), I copied all the files in the DELETED.SAV directory to their original path manually and discard the older files (the ones my custumer recognized), anyway, thank you all again http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif

There is an excellent utility from WiredRed software ( http://www.wiredred.com ) called Salvage98, which is a graphical salvage utility that beats the pants off of either the NWAdmin salvage or the Salvage you can do from Windows Explorer if you have Client 3.1 or better installed. Salvage98 has an Explorer look and feel to it, and you can quickly browse for files in directories you know were deleted, or you can use the Find function to find files by name. I don't leave home without it. And it fits on a floppy (-:

Thanks for the tip, pcshark. I will have to try this software the next time somebody in my office "erases something important by accident."
