Have 486 dx4 recently upgraded hdd to 520mb and ram to 16, when I got machine CMOS battery was flat. Had no problems loading DOS 6.1 and WFWorkgroups. However, cd will not load, light comes on and message "drive could no be found - aborting installation appears. Have tried setting CD as both primary and seconday device. Can anyone offer any advice?

I assume "Drive could not be found - aborting installation" comes up when you try to install the CD-ROM drivers from the driver disk. Did the drive work before the hard disk was upgraded? If the CMOS backup battery was flat, the system may have been unused for a long time, in which case electrolytic capacitors in older drives can deteriorate & cause non-operation.

What type of CD-ROM drive is it? Are you sure you are installing the correct driver?

If it is definitely an IDE drive, try substituting it in a system that is operating normally. If it gives "drive not ready" errors when you try to read a disk, the laser lens may need cleaning.
