i assume that you have tried other cds right?
You might want to install an updated driver for your controller. This cdrom is IDE right? You may also want to disable the dma option under system properties if that doesn't work.
You also need to make sure that you are not loading real mode drivers under the autoexec.bat file or the config.sys file.
Bythe way, what OS is this?

It's possible that a cdplayer other than the windows default has been installed by you or another program and has at least partially associated itself with CDA files. Look in Add/Remove programs. Also try re-associating CDA files with cdplayer.exe
Put an audio cd in and hold down shift to disable autorun. Go into My Comp and right click on cdrom and click explore. Shift+right click on a song and choose open with and find cdplayer.exe

Someone else help me out here, but if it is with the software, I *think* you can take care of that by going to control panels => add remove programs, then windows setup tab, uncheck all the multimedia stuff, restart, and then re-check it all. this is a guess, it's worked before on similar problems i've had with network protocols. i don't know why it would screw anything up but use at your own risk. as far as I know this would clear up the problem if it were a corrupt file like the volume control, etc. folks, correct me if i'm wrong. thanks
