I have done everything I know of to fix this problem except replacing the CPU and MB. It doesn't matter what OS I install, this Compaq Presario 4880 locks up everytime I try to do 2 or more things(multitasking problem???Replaced RAM, didn't fix it). Could the CPU be causing this? What other things could be happening here. PLease help. Email me if you have any suggestions or need more info. Jerry

Is the motherboard battery dead. I have seen that happen due to the battery being dead before. Just a thought.

The problem can also be caused by some other hardware devices. The following are the generic troubleshooting steps to identify the hardware problem:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System.
3. On the Device Manager tab, disable all the following devices:
- Display adapters
- Floppy disk controllers
- Hard disk controllers
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Network adapters
- Ports
- PCMCIA socket
- SCSI controllers
- Sound, video, and game controllers
4. Restart your computer and test this issue again. If the problem doesn't occur anymore, you can enable each device at one time, until the problem reoccurs. Then you will know which device is the culprit.

Another, maybe simpler route to accomplish Sabin's suggestion...
Start/Run...type msconfig....on the "general" tab, you'll see a button for "diagnostic startup-interactively load device drivers and software." Then restart. This can be time-consuming, but informative.
