Splash

I have clean installed WinMe. The OS works fine. I do have a small gripe though. When I formatted the HD, I used a Win95 recovery floppy. Now when I boot up I get a Win95 splash screen while the pc is booting. Can I change the splash for one of my own preference?

Hmm.. Never seen anything like that before, I don't see how a format can actually load another O/S splash screen. Could be possible I guess if it actually loaded files after the format since it is some kind of recovery disk. I believe there is a key in the registry that can change the splash screen, but not for sure. If all else fails just create a ME startup disk and format from that.

Strangely enough, I also have a Win95 startup screen... on a Netware 5 server!!! :eek:

It's the funniest thing to see outside consultants reboot the server only to see a Win95 boot screen pop up to their amazement :p

The COMMAND.COM used to format and undergird the Netware 5 installation was that of Win95, so...

I've never thought of removing it though - I get too much enjoyment out of it.

I only have one logo.sys file listed on my PC. I opened it with Paint Shop Pro. It is the
" It is now safe......" logo. That is the only one I can see. I can`t find the Win95 screen anywhere. I can assure you that it does come up on start-up. I don`t want to re-format. I am not really that bothered about the screen itself. I am more interested in finding out if I can change it. :p :rolleyes:

LOGO.SYS - The startup screen, usually located in your C:\ directory.

LOGOW.SYS - The 'Please wait...' screen, usually located in your c:\windows directory.

LOGOS.SYS - The 'It's now safe to turn off your computer.' screen, usually located in your c:\windows directory.

have done this in the past ,,,,,where customer refused to have 98 on his machine ,,,,,typed sys c: from a 95 boot disk ,,,,,,told him he was using 95 version 4 ???????

seriously my thoughts would go towards someone typing sys c: from an earlier CD.(as you have said you used a recovery disk)

if you MUST ,,, then format a floppy with me o/s and sys.com and type sys c:

When you used the format comand with the /s switch from a Win 95 startup disk, the IO.sys system file was created. When windows first boots, if the logo.sys file is not present in the root directory, it loads the splash screen that is embedded in the IO.sys file. If it is no the IO.sys file, then it is one of the other system files.

In other versions of Windows 9x you can override the splash screen by placing a customized (or default) logo.sys in the root directory. Not sure if it works the same with Windows ME.
