I can't get o0ut of an ME reinstall loop.

Q: How do I quit the install process and get ME to do a "Normal" boot?

I tryed to do an over the top reinstall of ME on a friends PC, to replace a missing mouse driver and some other files. The original ME CD and key were not available, but I had an ME CD and reinatalled from this. I had to skip some steps as a "mini.cab" that install was looking for on C: was not found. The mouse drivers are now reinstalled, but the installation process won't finish, it gets stuck on "Setting up Hardware" and restarting the PC doesn't help. Now every time I reboot the install process tryes to finish, but won't. I want to get out of install and finish configuration manually, but can't find the command that re-starts the install, to disable it.

Q: How do I quit/finish the install process and get ME to do a "Normal" boot?

P.S. I can boot into safe mode or DOS, to edit any startup files or registry keys, if someone knows what to edit.

I really don't think it would be wise to try and 'get out' of the install - Windows needs to finish the install to correctly setup all the hardware. It may seem as if everything will work but your bound to have problems. Firstly, when Windows asked for the Mini.CAB file, did you try to point the installer to the WinME directory on the CD using the Browse button? If not, then you should reinstall again by running setup.exe. Secondly, if Windows is hanging when installing new hardware, the best thing to do is to remove all cards such as sound, modem, network , 3D video cards, tv tuners, etc and just leave the primary display adapter installed. Run setup and let windows install correctly. Then add back one card at a time, installing drivers if necessary for each one. If Windows still hangs during setup then reset all BIOS settings to their defaults and try again. If still no joy then let us know the specification of the system.
