1% to 2%

Hi, i have come to this forum for help in the past, and know that you guys know your stuff.
my friends computer

has this error message come up once windows loads

cannot upgrade from 1% to 2%.

I try to boot the computer using safe mode but it always freezes any solutions?

OK, well, something is obviously trying to start each time. MSconfig is the easy way to look for it. Does this happen if you boot to safemode? If not then Start, run, msconfig and look at the last tab first, uncheck one thing at a time until you discover the culprit.

If that fails look at the system.ini and win.ini tabs for load or run entries...

Are you trying to upgrade directly from Microsoft automatically?

What changes you made to OS, or to software, just before this message started to show up? Any details would help.

Since it is freezing in safe mode I would say that you are looking at a Windows problem. In safe mode there should be no startup programs or drivers to lock up the machine.
Just for ****s and giggles try putting the hard drive in another computer (as a slave), that also has updated anti-virus software installed, and check the drive from that system.
If it checks out clean, I'd say backup and reinstall.

this problem is specifically addressed by MS at support.microsoft.com. Your problem deals with an improperly created winini.ini file. Search for it on the hdd in the c:\windows dir (maybe windows\system) and rename it. Windows will then startup normally, but whatever program you last installed/uninstalled won't be properly configured.

PS: if you leave a PC with this problem for like 12 hours (maybe more) it will eventually boot. It is not necessarily locked up, just busy doing something.
