A "new" winME question for ya

Okay, here be the scoop...I was running winME on a PIII800 w/384M PC133 and a 15G ATA66 HD. A couple of days ago got this alert from Napster (and subsequently from ME) that I was running dangerously low on HD space. I had just checked on free space the day prior to this event and had about 71/2g free. When I checked again I had ONLY 48M! WTFO?!? Did some snooping in the _restore folder and found that the temp folder w/in that was 8GIG in SIZE! Nothing but a bunch of .cpy files. (Sorry this is getting so long)Tried everything to delete the offending files, even booting clean and then trying to delete from DOS prompt...NO JOY! Ended up replacing drive and reinstalling ME (yeah, I know, glutton for punishment)but when I installed the orig hard drive as a slave and checked the aforementioned folders, the .cpy files were GONE! SO...anyone know of a way to keep these files from adding up? The c:\_restore\temp folder is now 6.2M and last nite it was only 4.7M Turned off system restore function already. Any other suggestions?

To tell you the truth, especially in the early days of my experience with ME, "Restore" saved my bacon more than once. In lieu of turning restore completely off, I opted to go into control panel>system>file sysytem properties...then limit the "system restore disk space."

Worked like a charm...I set mine to around 2GB, and the only thing you'll notice is that the restore points don't go back as far.

But, it'll still be there when you need it, only in a greatly limited "HD chomping" configuration! Hope this helps! http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm11.gif

I had a similar problem and this was my solution as well except I went to 5gb (about 15% of my drive). Should do the trick.

There is a way to delete those files without reinstalling. You need to boot into DOS (using boot disk) and del the files in the _retore directory. You will only be able to see a few files in DOS, but once those are gone you can kill the rest of the back up data in windows. After i found my 6 or so gigs sitting there i turned it off, but maybe limiting the size is not a bad idea.

I have done both of the following with no problem.. 1: under Preformance/File System/Troubleshooting.. select the Disable Syatem restore 2: using Explorer, right click on the _restore folder/properties/uncheck the read only (and/or) hidden. then you can repeat this with the temp folder if needed and then delete. It will return if you have to use the 3 finger restart

THANKS! To all who posted replies. Tried a couple of the suggestions and went to Axcels page for a couple more (among other AWESOME little goodies http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm32.gif ). The beast has once again been tamed! I currently run all 3 of the current flavors of windows on my home network machines and maybe one day I'll decide which one I like best (or...maybe...LINUX!?!?!)
