Certain new CD-ROMS that I have installed recently are reading some DATA CD's as Audio and starting off the CD Player - any simple explanation for this ??

I bet you're using Creative ones.
RMA them all. This problem is common and caused by the CD-ROM units.

The drives are OEM Sony - maybe they have "Creative" Insides !!

No. They don't have "Creative inside", but they seem to have the same problem.
