Hey guys,
I have a friend with a cd rom that's showing
up in device manager and my computer. But you
click on d: drive and it does nothing except
give message (d: is not accessible.the device
is not ready.retry ,cancel.) Like cd is not
in cd drive.Should I tell her to get a cleaner first or do you think the cd rom
is spent.Driver is loaded.

Cleaning might help but the odds are it has failed. Try another drive to prove it isn't something else such as a faulty cable, controller, or virus.

Hi,
Another possibility is that some of the older CD-ROM drives have a hard time reading CD's that were created on CD-Writers. You might try an original CD from a manufacturer or game supplier if you haven't already done so. If this is the case, all you can do is buy one of the newer CD-ROM drives. Also, make sure that there are no conflicts in Device Manager...i.e. an "X" or exclamation mark beside any device.
Hope this helps you out...Good Luck!

It won't read manufactured cd's.As far as
controller or cable,if they were bad,
it wouldn't show up at all in device manager
would it?There are no conflicts.Everything
looks perfect until you click on D.It won't
auto run either. She doesn't have an anti-
virus program on there,that's something
else to think about.Oh well, thanks guys,
maybe I can get a chance to get over there
and take a look at it.
Thanks again,

It could be the cable from the optical block to the circuit board inside. If you feel comfortable with it, take the drive apart and take this cable out then reinstall it, the leads could be dusty or came loose from movement.
