My explorer.exe was altered when my computer became infected by a subseven trojan. The server that I had to run was initially hidden underneath a file called freaky.wav. Now for some reason my explorer.exe has the icon of a wav and when I double click it, it brings up cannot find freaky.wav. And everytime I start windows freaky.wav tries to play. I have taken it out of all the start command lines but it is still hidden in explorer.exe. Now i noticed that in a hex editor that there are several lines of subseven stuff. Can I just remove the lines using the hexeditor and then will it work. Or is there somewhere where I can get a new explorer.exe to replace mine? Please help, I ve been dealing with this problem sonce about a year.

To remove the lines from your exe file using your hex editor is a tricky play. It could be OK as much as not OK. Removing a line by itself may be the infection proper but if other lines in the program have pointers to the line you romoved you are doomed. If replacing a new exe file is the ultimae solution, then it would be worth the effort to delete your lines and see what happens.

and before you delete the lines you are complaining about, save a copy of the current file in case you would need it.

you can extract another copy of explorer.exe from the CD. Or you can find another computer running the same OS and make a copy. (In DOS of course. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">)

Perhaps your best short path is to re-install ME atop itself. If you are prompted to overwrite the existing files say yes. You still might have to update the critical components from Microsoft directly. Use Windows Update for that purpose
